Yahoo Pipes - Roll Your Own Web Mashups

pipes1

Have you played around with Yahoo Pipes yet?  Or even heard of it?  Me either, until last night, when I saw a writeup on it at Mashable.  Now it’s bookmarked and getting use on the laptop and the iPhone.

So what is Yahoo Pipes?

Pipes is a powerful composition tool to aggregate, manipulate, and mashup content from around the web.

Like Unix pipes, simple commands can be combined together to create output that meets your needs:

  • combine many feeds into one, then sort, filter and translate it. pipes2
  • geocode your favorite feeds and browse the items on an interactive map.

Pipes has some neat how-to videos to get you going on creating your own Pipes, and its interface is pretty intuitive and nice to work with - features like drag and drop your elements onto a working pane, and refresh to see the results of your pipe as you build it, make it easy to dive in.

If you’re too lazy to deal with making your own pipes (like me), then you can explore other clever people’s published pipes and add them to your Pipes page for frequent use. There are all sorts of cool pipes already out there to use - local traffic and weather results, Hot Deals searches, aggregators of lots of top news feeds that can be processed with a keyword of your choice, and lots of Twitter and Flickr and Facebook based aggregators.

Pipes looks very powerful, as well as easy to use - always a very nice combination. And its got an iPhone version that looks great.
