Is There an iPhone (doctor) In The House?

Have you spotted a doctor or nurse cranking out an iPhone to look up yunbound1our latest symptoms?  I haven’t yet, but it looks like that may be coming soon.

Unbound Medicine has just released Unbound MEDLINE for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  Here’s the publisher’s description of what Unbound MEDLINE offers:

Unbound MEDLINE provides instant access to more than 17 million journal articles so healthcare providers can practice evidence-based medicine right at the point of care. Unbound MEDLINE’s powerful yet intuitive interface quickly searches the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed® database. Unbound MEDLINE users can track leading journals and receive tables of contents and abstracts from selected journals directly to their iPhone. Plus, Unbound’s unique Best Evidence search instantly defines search parameters to retrieve evidence-based journal articles in areas of relevance to practice.

The iPhone’s multitouch interface makes it a natural for uses like this - but I think I’d get a bit ‘edgy’ (bad pun intended) if a healthcare pro was waiting on EDGE speeds to cure me of my ills! :)

Access to Unbound MEDLINE is apparently free only for a ‘limited time’, and you can check it out at:

www.unboundmedicine.com/medline

Wallpaper - My newest Addiction

snap_140428

What’s the speech they give at AA? Well, here’s mine - Hi! My name is Brandon and I’m a Wall-a-holic. I’ve been Wallpaper free for less than 5 minutes.

I’m sure you’ve all been paying attention to the iApp-a-Day project and I’m here to admit that I’ve only installed a couple of them (and quickly un-installed most) and I honestly skipped Wallpaper at first. I mean seriously… like I need a wallpaper application.

Well, turns out I do!!! The premise is you download the application, run it and it uploads your wallpaper. The kicker is it then begins to act like a slide show, showing you wallpaper that everyone else is using AND it lets you download that wallpaper to your camera roll or apply it as a wallpaper.

Sounds simple, frankly sounds boring. But I’m addicted. I can’t help but sit here and watch the new wallpaper scroll by! So - PLEASE help feed my addiction. Download Wallpaper - I wanna see what you’ve got on your screen!!!

(PS. There are some folks with questionable use of the built in camera and applying that as wallpaper. Wouldn’t recommend those easily offended download.)

3G iPhone Next Year - Will You Upgrade?

3Giphone1

We all knew that a 3G iPhone had to be on the cards sometime, and now it looks as if AT&T’s CEO has confirmed that a 3G model will be available next year.

"You’ll have it next year," he said, explaining that he was unaware of how much more the new version will cost than the existing $399 model because Apple chief executive Steve Jobs "will dictate what the price of the phone is.”

No word yet on when next year we should expect to see a speedier iPhone.  The holdup has always been blamed on Apple needing to find w ays to get to an acceptable trade-off of less battery life vs. faster connectivity.

As far as that trade-off goes, I would be willing to settle for just mediocre (or even slightly bad) battery life if it helped get me 3G speeds.  I’d happily cope with finding a decent portable charging solution and the slight hassle of using it, if I knew I could nearly always work online much more quickly.

So … I would also be very keen to trade up to a 3G iPhone just about as soon as it’s available. I would hope and expect that there should not be a major premium for a 3G model, as it’s hardly a brand new or unique feature.

How about you all - would a 3G model have you looking to upgrade immediately?  What are your thoughts on battery life and price points that would make the 3G iPhone a must-have?

Battery replacement for your iPhone?

image

[picture via: geardiary.com]

Saw this one at Geardiary.com, and I just couldn’t resist sharing. This might be of great interest for those DIY type of person. Looks like igonemobile.com is selling this battery replacement for the Apple iPhone, and they got theirs hands on one.

Here’s what the article says about the battery replacement kit.

The Apple iPhone Li-Ion Battery+Replacement Kit does have a screwdriver, a green plastic mini pry bar, and an instruction manual in English. The 1400mAh, 3.7V iPhone battery looks authentic, but what frightens me is the three exposed wires.

This is suppose to be review article, but I didn’t really read anything that would suggest it being a review. Nonetheless, still interesting to see that there’s an option for DIY when my iPhone battery dies.

Head on over to Geardiary.com for the complete story.

Earthcomber iPhone Version Refreshed

earthcombernew1

Earthcomber is definitely one of my favorite iPhone web apps, as I’ve blabbed about before, and it’s just got a little bit of a refresh and upgrade to its already excellent features.

For those who haven’t discovered it yet, Earthcomber is a great location finder, which provides a great mobile client for just about any flavor of mobile device - it’s great for finding restaurants, nightlife, businesses, and all sorts of places of interest when you’re on the go (over 10 million places around the US). It’s definitely my first resource to look at when we’re going out and searching for a cool place to end up at.

Earthcomber’s latest refresh includes:

  • Speed increase
  • Improved location reviews
  • Photos of the locations (for many venues)

Great to see Earthcomber continuing to improve its already strong offering - and adding pics of many of the venues is definitely welcome.  Mother Egan’s Pub never looked better … :)

‘Fake’ iPhone Ringtones Ad Sounds Better Than The Real Thing

Thanks to reader - djrob73 - for sending in a link to this fake-looking but sweet-sounding iPhone ringtones ad.

The clip features a really likable song called ‘Holla At Me’ by a NYC group called The Bundies. And it manages to get the Marimba ringtone in there too - bonus :)

I think this track really makes the mocked-up ad feel more like one of the iPod ads, with tunes that stick with you instantly and make you want to go find them, rather than the pretty drab theme music for the iPhone ads we’ve seen so far.

If you like the song too, you might want to visit the band’s MySpace page and hear the full version:

Los Angeles Times Now Has iPhone Version

latimes1

The Los Angeles Times now has an iPhone optimized site that has just showed up as a Staff Pick in the Apple Web Apps directory.  LATimes.com offers the full range of news you’d expect - headlines, entertainmlatimes2ent, sports, weather and all the rest.

It’s good to see the number of leading news titles with iPhone optimized sites growing.  I’m not an LA Times reader, but I still like knowing  that there’s a good selection of news titles to choose from when you’ve got a few minutes to catch up on what’s happening in the world (or just read the sports section).

The LA Times looks pretty good on the iPhone - with clear navigation to all the main news topic areas and clean page layouts.  It’s not as cleverly done as the Wall Street Journal though - I think that is still my favorite iPhone optimized news site, with the most and best features and a very elegant layout.

You can get your LA Times news on the iPhone at:

Battleship Live P2P Sounds Like Fun

battleship1

Battleship - the classic game of finding and destroying your opponent’s ships - now has a live online version for iPhone - where you can play against other real live folks on the other side of your virtual board.

This is being touted as the first P2P game for iPhone.  To play, you just set your ship placement and then wait for an opponent.  The site allows you to use chat - so trash talking and whining when you get beat is possible, and you can also setup Private games if you want to take on a friend rather than trying your luck against the masses.

This new live version of Battleship sounds great.  I gave it a quick look (and completed the required free registration) earlier - but didn’t get a game yet as it sat there too long waiting to find an opponent.

I’m hoping for better luck - and some serious shop-sinking carnage - later on.  :)

Review: iPhone crystal case - Disc Jockey

dj_main

There are few things in this world that are guaranteed to grab my attention, and funky graphics are always on the top of my list. So when USBFever.com announced their fun new line of graphic case for the Apple iPhone, I just couldn’t pass it up.

dj_fullfront

I won’t bore you too much with all the “specs” and whatnot in this review, instead I’ll focus more on what new things this case brings to the table.

screencap1

Screenshot is now the hands-down choice for taking screen captures on the iPhone …

Screenshot, the native iPhone screen capture program from Robota Softwarehouse, has had a major series of updates this week - and I’m happy to report it is working just great now!

I’ve been using the latest version -1.2.1 - for a couple of days now and finding that it is now a reliable and effective program.  Here’s what is *very* good about the latest Screenshot version:

Bugs Fixed - the bug it had with requiring a Springboard restart to become enabled or turned on has been resolved - toggling the app on and off now works just fine every time

Save to Camera Roll & Other Locations - you can now choose to save your screen captures to the iPhone’s Camera Roll, or any of 5 other locations - and you don’t have to do any typing (and maybe having a typo make a directory path wrong) - as the app gives you a nice set of default choices to select from

More File Type Options for Your Captures - you can now choose to save your captures as .jpg, .png, Fax TIFF, or PDF.

More General Options - you can also now toggle off and on a sound effect (the camera shutter) when taking a capture, as well as choosing whether or not to show a confirmation message, and whether you want to see the View button or not.

Mail Directly from View Screen - this feature is very handy - now when you select the View button and browse through your existing collection of screencaps, you can select one and email it directly from the viewing screen.

The application is very stable now as well - I’ve seen *zero* freeze-ups or problems of any kind when running the latest version. This latest update has fixed all that was flaky about the program, and added some very nice new features in as well.

With these changes, Screenshot is hands-down the easiest and best way to take screenshots on your iPhone.

You can find Screenshot on Installer under the Utilities section.
