iMapIdle - Offers ‘Simulated Push’ Email, Supports Gmail

The IMAP IDLE protocol allows an IMAP email server to send out notification of new emails to a client. This means its a great way to implement a “push” email system that automatically sends messages out, instead of having to wait for the email client to poll the server …

iMapIdle is a new application that offers some of this IMAP Idle push functionality on the iPhone. The program is at a very early stage of development, but its current features include:

  • listens in the background waiting for new IMAP mail even if you are in sleep/standby mode
  • notifies you via a popup and/or sound. You choose how to be notified. Sound notification should use the same method your mail client uses
  • popup notification allows you to choose whether the mail client should check for email right there.
  • The popup will disappear after 20 seconds and if you miss it the iMapIdle icon will show you how many popup notifications you have missed
  • supports SSL connections and special support for GMail IMAP

The developer notes that the app has so far only been tested on firmware 1.1.1, and that he has no idea as yet how this will affect battery life. I’ve not tested this as yet either, but I have used Chattermail with IMAP Idle style push on a Treo, and it murdered the battery.

iMapIdle needs to be installed on the iPhone, so you’ll have to have opened yours up for 3rd party applications in order to use it.

And let us know what you think, and how your battery life holds up …

When Gmail comes out with their version of ‘Push’, could it solve the issue of not being able to change the sent-from address to something other than @yahoo?

I’m not sure on that one - have not seen or heard anything that mentions that issue at all.
