Rumors on New Features in iPhone’s Next Firmware, 1.1.3

firmware113maybescreencap

The GearLive site claims to have got a chance to play with iPhone firmware 1.1.3, and has screencaps and a list of new features:

  • Edit Home Screen
  • Drag Calculator App
  • Drag Mail App
  • New Google Maps Menu
  • New Google Maps Options
  • Google Maps Locate Me Feature
  • SMS Multiple People
  • New Bookmarks Menu
  • Add Bookmark to Home Screen
  • Bookmark on Home Screen

I can’t get to the GearLive post and screencaps gallery right now, as their site is slammed, but Macrumors reckons the grabs "appear convincing on casual inspection".

So … lots of grains of salt to be taken with this one.  If it’s accurate though, I’d say that’s a much more impressive list of new things than the previous couple of updates brought, especially the Locate Me feature.  I still wouldn’t trade 3rd party apps I don’t think - but that list is a little more tempting.

The GearLive screenshot gallary (if you can get to it) is HERE.

iSlots - Slot Machine Game Is Like Vegas on Your iPhone

iSlots2

iSlots is a 3 reel slot machine game for the iPhone.

Ok, I’m not generally a huge fan of playing slots - even when I lived in London where every pub had machines. But iSlots just looks spectacular on the iPhone.

And its sounds are pretty good as well.  iSlots is developed by Chris Miles / Rusty Red Wagon, and its features in this 0.1 release include:

  • Vegas style graphics and sounds
  • Saves credits
  • Double tap to get to options

iSlots is available on Installer now …

iPhone, Jailbroken Variety, Makes Wired Top 10 Gadgets of 2007

I know, I know - it is absolutely not very new news to tell you that the iPhone made it onto yet another ‘Best Something of The Year’ list - it’s on or at the top of just about all of those this year (and rightly so).  I think tapps2he only award it hasn’t got yet is a Nobel Peace Prize, and it’s probably nominated!

Anyway, the reason I think its presence on Wired’s ‘Top 10 Gadgets of The Year’, is notable is that they specifically list it as a jailbroken iPhone.  In fact, here’s just a taster of their views on the subject:

Out of the box, Apple’s iPhone is horrifically crippled.

I wouldn’t go that far, but I would agree that many excellent 3rd party apps are really helping lots of us to get maximum use and enjoyment out of the iPhone.

I think it’s nice to see one award for the iPhone that is also a direct criticism of the lack of 3rd party apps support thus far in iPhone’s life.  There’s an SDK (software development kit) coming from Apple next February - but really Apple could do with hurrying up, and making sure they manage to support the grass roots developers already producing apps, as well as all the big, mainstream software companies.

Check out the full Wired list, starting on the iPhone page, at:

iSMS = iPhone SMS on Steroids, Allows Sending to Multiple Recipients

iSMS1 iSMS2

iSMS allows you to send text messages to multiple recipients …

I swear, momentum is definitely picking up in the iPhone native apps arena.  A lot of good stuff is coming along without any whiff of an SDK from Apple just yet.

iSMS is another great example of an app that ticks off a popular iPhone Wish List item - as it allows you to send SMS messages to multiple recipients.

The interface for iSMS is much more like an email client - with folders for Inbox, Drafts, and Sent.  It also has a couple little niceties that many may enjoy - a set of smileys / emoticons to choose from and insert in your message, and a Templates list with a number of frequently used bits of canned text to insert without typing, such as: ‘Please call’; ‘I’m in a meeting, call me later’; ‘I am late, I will be there at’. There’s even a Search button to, well, search for keywords within your sent and received messages.

The app also offers a ‘Run in Background’ option under preferences, which of course is probably a battery buster, but hey it’s there if you want it.

iSMS does not do threading of your SMS conversations - but since the built-in iPhone text messaging app is still around, you can switch between the two and see threading when you want.

iSMS is available now via Installer.

This Has To Be One of The Best and Easiest Hacks Imaginable!!

garageband1

One thing I miss about Windows Mobile is Voice Command. It not only allows a great deal of control over the device with voice but it can also announce callers by name so long as they are in your address book.

Not so with the iPhone… until now.

Kevin Tofel over at jkontherun just shared a great hack from Steve Rubel . Using GarageBand, which as of last week can be used to create original ringtones, you simply record the name of a frequent caller. Attach it to that particular contact’s name (or you can record any message you want for that matter) and… there you go…

As Kevin put it… "why didn’t I think of that".

"When Haters Become Lovers"

It is a remarkable turn of events that I am now blogging about life with an iPhone. While I have long loved gadgets I had no interest in the iPhone when it was first announced. In fact, it wasn’t mere disinterest– it was… well, perhaps this email I sent to a friend a few months ago best captures it…

“This morning’s query (bearing in mind that the dog woke me at 4:30am wanting to play) — why am I so disinterested in the iPhone? Is it-

a- I am not a fan of Steve Jobs

b- I am not a fan Apple’s products

c- I don’t like companies telling me what I can and can’t put on my device- Lemmings are only good with a honey barbecue dipping sauce”

Things changed in August after I spent a few minutes playing with an iPhone at my local AT&T store. By the time I walked out I had become one of the growing number of converts. But that was just the beginning. My iPhone led to the purchase of an iMac and an iPod classic. And yes, while I ribbed my friend Dimitri for standing in line to get one of the first iPhones I will be right there with him when (if??) the new ultralight MacBook appears in January.

Yes, I am now a proud, card-carrying lemming– and I can’t wait to see what treats are in store at MacWorld.

But as bad as I was…. my friend Jamie was even worse. Her email to me shortly before the iPhone was released read…

”iPhone — NEVER.I’ve always hated not only how restrictive their products are, but there’s something about the smug, cult-like earnestness of the true fanatics that I find to be really annoying.  (And later) I totally cannot imagine giving up Windows Mobile at this point.”

When I emailed Jamie in August and told her I had just made, “the best tech purchase ever” she responded in the most understanding of ways –her email went like this—

”TRAITOR!! Why why why???? Well, I hope you’re enjoying that fabulous Edge browsing experience. The (expletive) device simply will not work in my universe. I abhor DRM and won’t go near iTunes – that’s just the beginning of my issues, oh yeah.. .and I love 3g… oh yeah.. and I hate Macs.”

In the months since I have continued to be the recipient of her “abuse”… until, that is, yesterday…  yes, yesterday my friend Jamie emailed me from her shiny new iPhone.

And it gets worse… because sometime in the near future she’s even getting a Mac.

When it comes to the iPhone it seems that even the haters can’t help but eventually become lovers, or at least be headed in that direction.

Now There Are Two iPhone Chess Games

caissa2 caissa1

Just about one day after the first native iPhone chess game was launched, along came a second - Caissa.

Caissa offers slightly more detailed looking pieces than Chess, but its gameplay is not quite as smooth just yet.  I found it difficult to get it to move a piece to its desired space fairly often, because it uses a sort of Tap / Hold / Drag method for moving your pieces, which seems to have an unintended bit of ’snapback’ to it - so it snaps the piece back to where you started, or sometimes even lands the piece short of its desired destination.

So … very nice looking this one, but needs a little work I think.  Hopefully a next version is on its way soon.

Caissa is available via Installer now.
