Finally - another BIG-time iPhone wish list item gets ticked off. Over The Air (OTA) sync with Google Calendars!
SyncJe has just been launched by nexthaus.com, and it is a sight for sore eyes. It will wirelessly sync your iPhone to SyncML servers, like goosync and mobical. It can sync calendars. contacts, and notes. I haven’t tried the latter two yet, but have successfully tested OTA sync in both directions with Goosync for my Google Calendar - Yay.
The other very good news on this one is that although it will be a paid-for app (with a 15 day trial) until Jan 8, nexthaus.com are giving away free licenses to everyone!
Read on for a few tips on getting yourself registered for it, and getting this working with Goosync …
So … to get going with SyncJe, here’s what you do:
- Go HERE to see initial setup and registering info
- Note - when you go to enter your registration info on the iPhone the ‘License Name’ asked for is the username you picked when submitting your registration form on the nexthaus site
- Check THIS PAGE for install instructions for the iPhone (you
need to add nexthaus’ Installer source) - To sync with your Google Calendar via Goosync, follow these instructions - you need a Goosync account (there is a free level one):
URL: http://sync.goosync.com
username: goosync username
password: goosync password
Turn contacts off
For Calendar, the folder name is "Calendar" without the quotes
Keep in mind, you will also have to log into the goosync web interface, and change your device there to be the iPhone. Login to https://www.goosync.com/Login.aspx then open My Device and then click on "Change Device…" button and find the iPhone.
You can also use SyncJe to sync with other SyncML servers - like MyFunambol and various others - and the developers are working on some more documentation for setting up sync with other services.
I’m not sure if I can just add my MyFunambol details to SyncJe, to control all my OTA sync in one app. Will try that soon, and will check out how Notes sync works.
For more details on SyncJe, and some very responsive and effective help from the SyncJe developers, see THIS THREAD at MMI.
Thanks to LouN from nexthaus for the great help with this today.
UPDATE: The folks at nexthaus have already produced some very useful addiitional "Quick Start’ information - that provides some further help on initial configuration of SynJe. You can find it at their Quick Start page:

I’m confused about what to do once I’ve installed SyncJe, registered with GooSync, and made the iPhone my device.
by patrick, on January 4 2008 @ 3:43 pm
hsep88 - you need to have setup your Google calendar in Goosync (and done the bit with allowing Goosync to access your Google Calendar). Then enter these details in SyncJe:
URL: http://sync.goosync.com
username: goosync username
password: goosync password
Turn contacts off
For Calendar, the folder name is “Calendar” without the quotes
Sane those settings and go back to its main screen an hit sync - you should see authenticating message, the syncing status.
Hope that helps …

Patrick,
Thanks a lot! I got it all set up… do I have hit sync every time I want it to sync? Also, I tried registering it with the information they gave me, but it still says I only have 15 days left of my trial period.
by patrick, on January 4 2008 @ 4:37 pm
Cool - glad it worked for you. I think ti is just manual sync for now, I have not seen any scheduling options. Not sure what’s up with the registration stuff - you should maybe ask LouN (one of the developers) at this MMI thread:

Right now there is no automatic sync, it was not ready in time. The rest of the SyncJe apps have it, and the iPhone will shortly…
by patrick, on January 4 2008 @ 6:38 pm
Thanks LouN - that would be a very cool addition - and that new UI looks nice too!
by parterburn, on January 4 2008 @ 6:58 pm
@hsep88: after you put in your name & key you have to hit the register button in the bottom left, not just save. I was wondering the same thing and I just saw that button.
@patrick: you might check out your feed - it looks a little funny without any formatting, the copyright on top, and the url of the post in the body (you can click on the title to get to the post).

I’ve tried registering repeatedly without success. I e-mailed their support team so hopefully I’ll be able to get some assistance. Thanks for the help though.

@hsep88 — I’m sure you’ve tried - but just in case. Make sure you aren’t using your name, but the username you submitted to them. For example - The full name I gave them was Brandon Steili. But the name I had to enter in the registration thing was ‘Netsyd’… the username I signed up with.
@parterburn - The joys of not using Feedburner. I keep trying to kick Patrick off of administering the websites… but he keeps winning the “king of the hill” battle.
@Patrick - FEEDBURNER!!!
The feed does look a little odd.
@LouN - Thank You! and the rest of the SyncJe team. I’ve been crying for wireless GCal Sync since day 1. I would assume you’re going to do what you can to follow the SDK and get Apple to approve the app? (assuming that’s how they are going to do it)
by LouN, on January 6 2008 @ 11:42 pm
@Brandon - Yes, hopefully Apple makes it easy

Version 1.0.3 is LIVE - Lots of bugfixes and compatibility updates.
by patrick, on January 25 2008 @ 1:17 am
Hey Lou - will it work with 1.1.3 firmware?
by patrick, on January 25 2008 @ 4:18 am
Yes, it will. Gets a Goosync error, but works.
by Fun Bobby, on February 21 2008 @ 8:49 pm
I tried SyncJe on 1.1.3 and it didn’t work for me. It installs ok on the iPhone and starts, but quickly crashes and sends me back to the springboard.
I have a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone and upgraded to 1.1.3 through iTunes and then used Ziphone to activate, unlock and jailbreak. Any ideas?
by patrick, on February 22 2008 @ 2:53 pm
Fun Bobby - I’m not having much luck launching it under 1.1.3 jailbroken via Ziphone method - it had previously worked under Dev Team method I’m pretty sure. Standard file permissions fix does not work. I hope Lou, from Nexthaus who make the app, may check in here and have a suggestion - he has done in the past.
Otherwise, I know there are several threads on SyncJe at the ModMyiFone forums …

I am helping a client sync his iPhone to Google calendar using GooSync and SyncJe rev 1.1.1. He bought the $39.95 version of SyncJe for iPhone and is using the free version of GooSync. The setup went fine for SyncJe on the iPhone and GooSync and the two way sync seems to be ocurring OK too, though he is reporting that events entered from his iPhone appear in Google Calendar a off by one hour. In addition, updates to events changed on his iPhone are not reflected in Google Calendar. Thus, if he changes a time for an event on his phone, it does not change in Google Calendar.
I suspect there is a daylight savings time issue with SyncJe since he is in EST and we changed to DST on 3/8/08 ahead of the Europe change on 3/30/08, since his iPhone and PC are set to the correct time. It appears there are reports of Daylight Savings Time issues - http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?p=241333 though I haven’t been able to confirm this.
I’m not sure why the changed events are not syncing since the 2-way syncs are occurring as requested and no errors are being reported by GooSync.
I contacted SyncJe tech support with the problems and asked if there would be an update to fix the DST issue and they replied “…We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are not authorized to provide such kind of information. In order to complete your request we suggest you to use the following link http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/ . In case if iPhone time has been verified as correct, we suggest you to contact Google support in order to resolve the issue.”
I also contacted GooSync support and have not received a reply.
If anyone has any suggestions, thoughts or has experienced any of these issues, I’d appreciate your input.
Thx -
Guy

Anyone have any thoughts yet on the issue I posted above. Events entered from an iPhone appear in Google Calendar a off by one hour when synced via SyncJe. Is anyone experiencing this?

gcortesi - Hi - sorry, I have not experienced that issue myself, but have seen it mentioned in this MMi forum thread:
http://tinyurl.com/283djz
There is at least one user in there with same or similar issue to yours, though sadly no resolution as far as I can see.
I mention it because one of the guys from Nexthaus - LouN - was at least trying to provide answers there for a while. Not so much lately, but perhaps another user reporting same time issue may help get him back on the case …
by LouN, on May 12 2008 @ 9:45 pm
gcortesi - That issue was fixed (along with adding AutoSync) in the latest release if you want to take a look again:

When the 2.0 iPhone firmware is released, you’ll have another option for Google to iPhone sync : http://www.nuevasync.com. Similar to Goosync, except we implemented the Exchange sync protocol, which the 2.0 iPhone has built in, rather than SyncML (which isn’t built in). So no software to install on the device : just configure its ‘Exchange’ client to point to Nuevasync and you’re done.
