Listen - iPhone App That Names That Song for You - Gets Some Quick Updates

listenbeta3

The Listen app for iPhone - which lets you just ‘hold your iPhone to the music’ while it samples a short chunk and identifies the song details for you - has already got a couple of quick updates from its creator, Erica Sadun.

It’s now on Beta 3 and the main changes, or just things I’ve now noticed with the app, are:

  • Now has a little bit prettier interface (e.g. a colored background), though it’s still pretty bare bones
  • Gives you a one-tap option to send an email, and nicely fills in the boilerplate text with song details for you, as shown in the screenshot above
  • Also offers a ‘Find in iTunes’ button - but this one does not currently work for me, as it fires up Safari instead of the iTunes WiFi store
  • Improved internationalization
  • Does not need to have the iPhone placed close to a speaker as its initial status message seems to imply - it works fine for me from across the room from my sound system, playing at a moderate volume

Anyway, nice to see this very cool app getting some very quick updates.  Beta 3 is on Installer now …

UPDATE: Beta 4 is now on Installer, and Beta 5 on the way.  The app now has a button to tap to get it to start sampling.  Also has useful brightening of the status bar to let you know when it’s done sampling and is contacting server, and now allows you to sample another track straight after you’re done with one.

UPDATE: As of 1/14/08 - Erica’s site now has an R.I.P. Listen post up - apparently licensing fees for the server / connection end of this app are unrealistic, and the app is no longer being developed.
