With less than a week to go before the Apple SDK & Software Roadmap event (next Thursday) the rumors are really starting to fly as to what we can expect to hear and how things will pan out post-SDK release.
Naturally, some of the whisperings and predictions sound very good, from a user’s point of view, and some don’t. It seems like a lot of folks are beginning to feel pretty negative and pessimistic about things overall in the last few days - I’ve already seen some folks in forums and on web-sites sounding very glum about what we’ll hear and what we’ll see afterwards - sounding like Apple’s really going to keep developers down, and keep the iPhone platform very tightly guarded.
I don’t feel that way - still feel quite optimistic in fact. Read on for a brief rundown of some of the latest rumors and some quick reactions to them …

We already knew that the latest iPhone firmware - Version 1.1.4 - had changed very, very little from 1.1.3, and we’ve known for a few days that jailbreaking was still possible on this latest firmware.
In the last day or so, two of the very popular and easy jailbreak methods have been updated to work with the 1.1.4 firmware - iNdependence (Mac only) and ZiPhone, for both Mac and PC. Zibri’s previous versions of ZiPhone have already been used by many people with varying degrees of success, but I preferred holding off until he had a new release up, which happened today.
I have been so impressed with Zibri’s ZiPhone method that I’ll be giving that one a go again this evening or during the weekend - as I want to get my iPhone up to latest firmware prior to the SDK event next week, and I still want my ‘unoffocial’ apps.
For more info on the iNdependence utility, see this post. To get the latest ZiPhone tool, go HERE …
I love listening to podcasts on my iPhone. I pop my iPhone into its cradle, sync it with iTunes and I am good to go… unless… I forget to sync it. If that happens, which it often does, I need to go on the hunt for the URL in order to stream the program I want. Yes, it is possible to find the URL and stream. It works, but it is a royal pain in the neck.
That’s why Alex Sokirynsky’s new Web App- Podcaster is such a great new addition to the iPhone universe.
I have seen this sort of theme, or possibly even this very one, around before - but never managed to find an install source and grab it. Spotted this one - iWood Realize from iSpazio - on Installer tonight and think it looks excellent.
It’s a Summerboard theme with some really different and sharp looking icons, and a great overall look as well. It also looks very sharp on screens with very few or no icons:
While tons of users out here may be anxiously awaiting Apple’s SDK goodness next week, it seems pretty clear that lots of iPhone developers are just carrying on figuring it all out for themselves.
Today I’ve been trying out ContactFlow - created by Fafoulon - which lets you navigate through your contacts via CoverFlow, and call them or launch the Email app to mail them with just one tap.
I don’t how much I’d use this one, as I think I’m more comfortable with the Photo Dial app - but this one still looks quite cool, as do any of them that work with CoverFlow.
To try this one out, you’ll need to add the following source to Installer:
Caissa - one of the two native chess games for the iPhone - has had another update, and added a couple nice little touches.
It’s now got a colorful row of buttons across the bottom of its game screen, providing quick access to some common tasks. You can Undo (unlimited number of moves back I think), Save your game, Load a saved game, Flip the board around, and get a Hint on what to do.
Both Caissa and Chess have been getting frequent updates since they launched, and both are very solid games by now.
O2 is going to launch the iPhone in Ireland on March 14th, just three days shy of being a St. Pattie’s Day present for Irish iPhone lovers.
An 8GB model will go for €399, and the 16Gb big brother will cost €499. Sounds like Ireland is getting a severely bum deal on data rates and carrier plans though:
Tariffs range from €45 for 175 minutes to €100 for 700 minutes, and all plans include 1GB of data.
That’s very steep - voice data rate substantially higher than in the UK, and no unlimited data - and even worse if reports that Visual Voicemail is not included are true!
I don’t know if we have any Irish readers, but if we do - are you spitting out your Guinness when looking at those rates???

I think the word PWNED is way, way over-used by now, and often used when there is no real justification for it. But … this seems a pretty appropriate use, and pretty funny as well.
Check the video HERE to see the iPhone restore screen owned good and proper …

Here’s some more *very* positive sounding omens on the future of software development and apps for the iPhone.
Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, Timothy Cook, was at a Technology Investment Symposium today, and was asked some pointed questions about the SDK, 3rd party apps, and iPhone unlockers. His answers all sound very promising …
Cook referred to the iPhone as "a platform not a product" - cool - as in, a mobile computing platform.
He also said the SDK would "broaden the platform more, to the point where the only limit will be people’s imagination.”
On the surface, little has changed, but look closer and you will see that with the launch of iPhone 2.0 software to go with the new 3G device, the iPhone has become less a mobile communications handset and more a pocket computer. — The Telegraph
