iSkyGaze is a really great-looking new web app for the iPhone and iPod Touch - that gives casual star gazers a handy guide to all the major celestial objects. For now, this includes the sun, moon, and planets - and there are plans to add more (like deep space objects) as the app develops.
Right now, the app is low on designer frills and high on good navigation and very good information. It lets you easily switch between sections that show you what is visible right now in your area, a daily planning section that what objects will be visible at what times throughout the day and night, as well as views for all objects and specific objects. It provides a good, detailed overview for each individual planet and object, as you can see in the screencaps above.
You give iSkyGaze your settings once - to let it know your city, state, zipcode (if in the US, otherwise, city, country,timezone) and it keeps those in a cookie to remember you.
Screens are simple but well laid-out and full of good information on how easy or difficult it will be to spot an object, and when are the best times to try.
I’m an absolutely casual (know nothing) star gazer, but we’ve been thinking on getting our daughter a telescope - and iSkyGaze looks like a very handy app to help us get the most out of checking out the night skies with her, with or without a telescope.
