Monster recently released this new iPhone-specific accessory, and a good friend of mine who works in the electronics wholesale business obtained one for me at CES since he knows how much I love gadgets in general and my iPhone (thanks Bob!). This is an accessory that will allow you to use any pair of headphones to make calls with the iPhone, as well as listen to music. Since it includes a microphone and control button to allow you to accept calls and hang up, as well as to pause and skip tracks while listening to music, you can use any old pair of headphones you have lying around. At $20, this could be less expensive for you if you already have a good pair of headphones that aren’t iPhone-compatible instead of buying a new pair.
Since getting my iPhone, I’ve pretty much retired my Etymotic ER-6i earbuds since they won’t fit into the iPhone’s recessed headphone jack (and I’ve been unwilling to try to modify the Etymotic’s plug to make it fit, and trying a Belkin adapter negatively affected the sound quality), but I brought them out of their hiding place in my desk drawer to test with this accessory.

Finally - some good news on the ‘Where is the SDK’ front. Apple has sent out an invite to a Town Hall event at their HQ next week:
Please join us to learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features …
This means the SDK release will have only been delayed by about a week, and we should be getting more good news than most expected. If ‘exciting new enterprise features’ means full Exchange support, or Exchange and Lotus Notes support, that is a very big deal, very good news for lots of iPhone users, and one less barrier to the iPhone making some inroads in corporate environments.
That one week delay will be forgotten in an instant if we get some real Exchange support and maybe some real, ready-to-go apps on 6th March.

Here’s one bit of modding that may save you a fair chunk of change, but also requires some cojones, or just some solid hardware skills, to take advantage of.
USBfever are selling an iPhone replacement battery, and a toolset to go with it, for $24.99. So if you’re OK with voiding your warranty and probably having to do a bit of soldering to make it work, this will save you having to fork over $79 plus shipping to have Apple replace your iPhone’s battery when the time comes.
I’ve gotta say, this one’s not for me - I’ll stick to software mods thanks very much. For those who are braver and better on hardware tasks, check it out at:
A new Version 1.1.4 firmware for the iPhone has been released today, via iTunes. Apple’s release notes for it list only ‘bug fixes’, no new features.
So far, the early reports on it at TUAW and forum sites do not indicate any new features either. Maybe this is one that includes further changes that pave the way for SDK apps?
There are also some reports that ZiPhone - the easiest and most effective 1.1.3 jailbream method IMO, works with 1.1.4, but will not activate. Again, that’s not confirmed - just reported by some.
We’ll update this post as more information is available ….
UPDATE 1: According to TUAW and Nate True, the ZiPhone jailbreak method does still work on 1.1.4, but activation does not, and apps are probably broken. Zibri - the creator of the ZiPhone method - is advising users NOT to try to jailbreak 1.1.4 as yet, until more has been learned about it and methods have been updated …
LinkedIn - the leading business / social networking site - has brought out a shiny, new iPhone version, and it looks quite good.
The new iPhone beta version lets you see Network Updates, check on your own Profile, Search your contact list, and Invite new contacts.
The Invite feature looks particularly handy for when you meet someone while you’re at an event or out and about, and want to skip swapping business cards and add them to your network.
You can fire up the new version at http://m.linkedin.com/ - and you can check out a nice video run through of it HERE …
Springlets is a new iPhone site featuring a collection of ‘tiny apps’ that serve as handy shortcuts to add to your iPhone home screen, and save time on some common activities.
Right now there are a handful of springlets available in 3 main categories (Searches, Speed Dial, and Site Mods), but I imagine the number and variety of them will grow soon.
I tried out nearly all the available springlets, and the three most useful-looking for me are: Speed Dialer, Just Text, and Wikipedia Search …
Here’s a little more good news for all of us with jailbroken iPhones, while our hopes of seeing the SDK come out this week fade with each new delay rumor - another great new source has just been added to Installer.
The ‘Fight Club’ source, from EIC forum member x999x - offers some very nice themes for Summerboard, TTR, and Garf, a handful of cool wallpapers, the clever Blank application, and quite a bit more.
I particularly like the Blank app, which provides an easy way to show off your wallpapers and keep a minimalist ‘blank’ home screen, while still easily accessing all your apps and webclips.
OK, so it’s looking more and more like the SDK is *not* going to get released on time this month. So … what do we do in the meantime? Well, jailbreak and enjoy the ever-increasing number of cool apps already developed without any SDK / help from Apple.
Now you can add 3D Games to the list of cool things to try out. Yeti3D is a Doom / Quake like game with lights, 3D enemies, health, ammo and all that jazz. iPac3D is a Pac Man inspired game where you run round a 3D maze and face off against 3D human enemies. Both games look amazing on the iPhone, and already play pretty well also.
As with any app, and perhaps especially with a voice command program, your mileage may vary a whole lot - but I honestly felt the last few days like I wanted to turn into the Verizon TV ads guy, and just ask Voice Dial ‘Can You NOT Hear Me Now???“ — Patrick’s Voice Dial review
