SafariDL for iPhone - Yes, that DL Stands for "Download"!

imageYou’d better believe it! You can now download files on your iPhone/Touch with this new plugin from x999x over on the everythingiCafe forums.

He explains in a YouTube video how to install it (and successfully uninstall it) and use it. The download interface even has a progress bar! Just make sure you’ve got Mobile Finder hooked up with AVPlayer so you can play the file locally once you’ve downloaded it.

I’d never used either of those programs before (I don’t tinker nearly as much on the iPhone as I did on WM), but once you find them them the experience is pretty much exactly as you see on the YouTube video. Go to a site, click on the link, rename (if you want), and download. After that you just find the file in your downloads folder and listen to your new tune locally. Hurray for true Internet browsing with download capability!

Enjoy!

iPod family pic

Image Source: Gadgets on The Go

Apple Insider has got a report up detailing some really *huge* predictions for the iPhone over the next year.  The bold predictions from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster are very encouraging for current and future iPhone owners, and those who want to upgrade of course.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • The iPhone line will be extended and will include some lower-priced models
  • The total sales of all iPhone models will combine for sales of 45 million units next year
  • A 3G model to be introduced in the next 3-6 months
  • A willingness on Apple’s part to vary their business model, and not insist on revenue sharing with all carriers, which is seen as a probable pr-requisite for getting the iPhone into China
  • A drop in the Average Selling Price for iPhones from $489 in 2007 to $365 in 2008 to $314 in 2009.

That 45 million number looks just enormous.  Part of Munster’s reasoning in being so bullish on iPhone growth is that the iPod line was slowly and steadily diversified, and the iPhone thus far has a much, much quicker ramp-up in sales figures than the iPod did at this stage of its history.

Here’s to hoping those forecasts are even close to being right.  While I am most anxious to see a 3G model get launched, it would also be great to see some lower-priced models.

Check out the Apple Insider report HERE for lots more detail and number-crunching on all of this …

When You Gotta Go, You Gotta Take The iPhone???

iPhone in the bathroom

TUAW spotted an interesting iPhone photo on their Flickr pool - showing off the perfect holder for all your ‘I’m taking the iPhone with me when I go’ sort of needs.

Apparently that is the Naja King doing the stylish holding of the iPhone - a 3 foot coil which pivots to provide landscape or portrait viewing modes in (hopefully) more rooms than just one in your household.  You can grab one HERE for $39.99.

My wife already reckons me and the iPhone are a little too attached - I think if I proposed this setup in the throne room, she’d be giving me my marching orders :)

Latest iPhone Beta Firmware Build - New Feature Details, Screencaps at BGR

The Boy Genius Report has a gallery up of screencaps of the latest iPhone 2.0 firmware that has gone out to developers, and a few details on changes they’ve noticed in the new firmware build.

Nothing earth shaking, but a couple of nice and wished-for items have appeared.  There is now a home screen icon for the Contacts applet. This is a good addition, as many people have missed this, and those of us who are jailbroken have had this feature for some time now (thanks to Erica Sadun).   The other notable new item BGR have noticed is one that is most relevant to brand new iPhone users wanting to make transition to the iPhone as smooth as possible - a ‘Import SIM Contacts’ option in phone settings.  That’s a big help, and another area where some third party apps (can’t recall names right now) have filled in up to now.

Ziphone 3.0 screencap

Ziphone 3.0 was released yesterday by Zibri.  In this release, the best, easiest, and most ful-featured current jailbreak method for iPhone has added a few more bells and whistles, which it probably needs to do since the Dev Team’s ‘next level’ pwnage tool is due out this later this week.

Here are some of the new features:

- No more need of fix nvram!
- Solution for GREYED wifi!
- No need for YouTube Fixes!
- Embedded apps installer!
- Customized plugins !

Ziphone 3.0 also provides automatic installation of the BSD Subsystem (which is required in order for many other apps to install) and SSH.  This should be a a big help - as lots of jailbreakers have experienced problems downloading these apps in the past.  The Ziphone GUI on the Mac (and I assume same on a Windows box) provides a pretty good troubleshooting section as well.

My iPhone is in such nice shape (touch wood) at the moment that I have not yet tested out this latest Ziphone release - so I don’t know how the new plugins system works, or what the ’surprise’ feature is.  If you have had a chance to look at these, please share and let us know what you think …

GraphJam - Pop Culture for People in Cubicles

GraphJam 24 character graph

Way off topic here - but just thought I’d share a fun new site I discovered this weekend.  GraphJam - created by the same folks who brought us the I Can Has Cheezburger site - carries a tagline of ‘Pop culture for people in cubicles’ and is further described by its founders like so:

GraphJam is the unholy love child of bored office workers, music and pop culture.  The mashup of graphs and music did not originate here, but our inspiration comes from our friends at JamPhat.com/rap/. Our name is a homage to that site.

The site consists of a collection of satirical graphs.  Some of them are a bit out there, but lots of them are just very, very funny.  You can vote on the submitted graphs and submit your own as well.  This looks a good site to visit to lighten up a rough day or night.

Please note - many of the graphs use strong language and might not be safe for work.

Waiting on iPhone Launch in Canada? Sign The Petition

Petition for iPhone in Canada

Apple iPhone was released in the USA on June 29th, 2007. Soon after, iPhones were introduced in the United Kingdom, Germany and France in November 2007, and in Ireland and Austria in March 2008.

However, the USA’s largest trading partner and neighbour, Canada, does not have the iPhone yet.

Please recognize the demand for the iPhone in Canada. Or at least, please give us a release date to look forward to. Thank you.

Talk about being in demand.  Above is an excerpt from The Great Canadian iPhone Petition, the goal of which is to get Apple and / or the Canadian carriers to pull their fingers out and get the iPhone released in Canada, or at least get some real, firm information on a release timeframe.

Featured iPhone Theme: Macish 2.0

Macish 2.0 White iPhone Summerboard theme Macish 2.0 Blue iPhone Summerboard theme

Oh yes, this is definitely the theme for me right now.  I find this one - in both its color variations - to be just ultra-clean and great looking.

This is the Macish 2.0 Summerboard theme from MMi forum member Argo_Rei.

I love the icons, and there are tons of them, with more being added quite frequently.  I also very much like the two different wallpapers, for use with the blue and white versions of the theme.

I have not seen this one on Installer yet, so you’ll need to go HERE for the MMi forum thread with download links for it.

iPhone Pwnage screen 1

Looks like the iPhone Dev Team are pulling *way* ahead in that cat and mouse game with Apple security vs. iPhone hacking. They are set to release their ‘Pwnage’ software today, which will allow you to load any firmware image you want onto the iPhone, and even do so via iTunes!

Here are some of the details:

* The software is a self contained application (for MacOS 10.4.x and 10.5.x) that allows all current models of the iPhone device to be “Pwned”. This term (in relation to this software) refers to the patching of the stock bootloader so that it will allow the execution of unsigned code and circumvent code-signing checks. “Pwnage” only needs to be performed once to allow the additional features on the iPhone.
* The application also processes and modifies existing Apple archives so that unique, custom rolled firmware bundles can be installed onto the “Pwned” iPhone directly from iTunes.
* These ”.ipsw” files can be created and patched by the application to allow third-party modifications such as activation, application installation, baseband modification, custom phone graphics etc.
* The tool works automatically on box-fresh (OTB) 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 iPhones and requires minimal interaction from the user.

There’s even a video of this new tool in action on both a computer and an iPhone - click the image at the top of this post, or go HERE, to check it out.

One last bit of good news on this front is that a patched version of the iPhone 2.0 firmware is also due out very soon - so you’ll be able to run the new beta firmware, and be fully jailbroken and unlocked via iTunes.  Sounds pretty slick, and like it’s not going to be a very quiet Sunday for lots of iPhone owners …

Via: Engadget Mobile and MMi

UPDATE:  3/30/08 The release of pwnage has been delayed, according to MMi, who have been very close to the Dev Team on this project. It is now due to appear later this week, with more features added - such as a wider OS support (Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, and Windows).   See MMi’s post HERE for more details on the delay.

SportsTap MyTap on iPhoneSportsTap MyTap on iPhone

MyTap is a customized user interface which allows you to control the players and teams you want to follow for NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL all within the stylish iPhone optimized display you are accustomed to with SportsTap.

SportsTap, which I’ve posted about before, continues to be my favorite source of quick sports scores and information on the iPhone.  They’ve recently launched a new MyTap feature, that lets you create a custom set of tracked teams and players - so you can filter out lots of noise and get straight to news and stats about your selections.  Current services include:

  • Customized Box Scores - Follow the teams you want to track instead of filtering through entire leagues.
  • Player Watch - Load the players you want to keep tabs on. See who is playing live or track their last game stats along with season totals.
  • Transactions - Daily Transaction News for entire leagues or view news for only your selected teams and players.

More services are due to be added to that list as well.  All of this looks and sounds quite good to me.  The only bad news is that you can trial the MyTap service for seven days, but after that you have to pay $1.99 a month for it.  I like the idea of tracking my own teams and  players, but not enough to pay for it I think - but I could see this being worthwhile if you’re heavily into some fantasy leagues, or other similar pursuits where you need this sort of info quick when you’re on the move.

Check out SportsTap HERE and let us know what you think …
