Just a couple days ago, I posted on the new Twitter.com mobile version which looks quite good on the iPhone. Today I’ve been trying out another new option for twittering - a new native Twitter app for the iPhone called MobileTwitter. The only other native Twitter app I’ve seen for the iPhone is Mobile Twitterific, and I think that has been thought of as more of a proof of concept thus far, and not very actively developed.
MobileTwitter was created by MMi forum member npike, and this first version of it is just what you’d expect. You use the bottom row of buttons to switch between viewing tweets from yourself and those you follow, public timelines, direct messages, and a screen for entering your own updates. One nice little feature is that the Updates screen shows you how many charcacters you’ve entered, so you know when you’re about to hit the limit - something that the Hahlo web app also does, but ironically the Twitter.com site does not do as yet. The only setting for the app so far is just entering your Twitter login credentials for it to save.
Right now I’m not sure there are any huge advantages in using a native Twitter app over a web app like Twitter on Thincloud or Hahlo - since they all rely on connectivity to transmit your updates, and update those from others you follow. There is not a big difference in speed of loading so far for me, between Hahlo and MobileTwitter. It will be interesting to see whether this - or other - native Twitter apps will develop any features that separate them a bit more from web offerings.
MobileTwitter is due to be on Installer soon, but for now you can grab it and do a manual install via the developer’s site:
