Freeverse’s SoundStudio3 is part of the current MacUpdate Bundle that I purchased last week. (It is an awesome deal- especially if you are a recent "switcher".) I spent a few minute today seeing what it could do with the recording of last night’s "trial run" for our upcoming JustAnotheriPhoneChat. It is quite impressive in its ability to remove background noise and pregnant pauses. (It can even cleanly remove a good deal of the ‘thumping" that takes place when a heavy-handed typist is using his new MacBook’s built-in mike AND typing at the same time.)
I was looking around Freeverse’s web site and I came upon this—

We spent about two hours on the phone last night doing a trial run of what should become a weekly podcast covering the state of the iPhone through the eyes of us here at JAiB and Judie over at Gear Diary. During this trial run Patrick mentioned that I was going to be attending a class next week (all week) and sitting for an exam next Friday. I didn’t have the time to expand on that very well during the call, so I thought I would mention it now.
As some of you may know, I’ve spent the last few years working in IT. I received a degree in Information Systems Security a couple years back and have been working in predominately Windows based environments since I started that degree program. I’ve worked in a small company heading up IT from a systems level, I’ve worked in a systems group for the feds, I’ve worked in a NOC doing Netbackup, and currently I work in another IOC helping manage systems in data centers all over the country. Almost all of this has been Windows.
But, recently along with my switch to the iPhone as my primary mobile device I’ve also found myself making the switch to a Mac at home. The more people I talk to in various IT groups - this seems to be a common trend. Maybe not the iPhone so much, but the switch to Mac by systems and network administrators. Which brings me back to this exam I have coming up. Next week I’ll be sitting for the RedHat RHCT exam. Why you ask? Why would a primarily Windows oriented administrator suddenly decide to go and sit down for a Linux exam?
The first iPhone video recording program that records audio as well as video has been launched today. It’s called iPhone Video Recorder and developed by DreamCatcher.
Here are some of its features:
Record both audio and video
Record to compressed mpeg4 format
Intelligent dynamic volume adjustment algorithm
Up to 15 fps with high-quality video
Playback, send out by email
I’ve been trying this one out for a short while just now - after a heads-up from dezign999 (thank you). So far, the compression rate seems very impressive. I’m limited to 30-second recordings for now as I’m not paid up, but the file sizes are much smaller than I’ve seen when using ShowTime. The app’s price is $19.99, which is steep, especially while it is a ‘jailbreak app’. If you pay up, you get unlimited recording time - well, limited only by the amount of free space on your iPhone that is, and with this app’s compression rate, that will allow for an awful lot of video.
Sound quality is ropy but tolerable. Overall, this seems promising - quality-wise, this does not seem like a candidate for uploading things to YouTube or similar, but does seem perfectly usable for capturing little moments on the fly and sharing them. Hopefully the quality will be improved in future versions. The encoding (which you can choose to start automatically or delay and invoke manually) is pretty quick, and emailing the files to myself was easy, and the files do play just fine on the Mac, first time.
Read on for more details and some of the FAQ section from the developer’s site …

This time she’s doing an Apple commercial (sorta) - and responding a bit to the iPhone review she did earlier. Seriously funny stuff. So take a couple minutes out of your day, grab a Coke and smile. Just make sure you aren’t drinking the Coke during this one… or you’ll end up blowing Coke out your nose all over your computer - and that wouldn’t be very funny.

Here’s something we’ve been meaning to do, and talking about doing, for ages - and we’re finally getting round to it. We’re going to start up a weekly live podcast / chatfest on all things iPhone. It’s called Just Another iPhone Chat - and we’re running it on TalkShoe, Monday nights at 10pm Central Time, starting next Monday, April 28th.
Earlier tonight Dan and Brandon and I, accompanied by the marvelous Judie Lipsett from Gear Diary, had a real blast doing some testing and a bit of a trial run. We had set out to do a quick 30-minute trial run. We ended up ‘trialing’ it for nearly two hours - covering lots of good iPhone topics, straying way, way off topic, and getting some awesome audience partcipation from @jcjdoss and @lividhatter - thanks again guys.
So starting next Monday night we hope you’ll come listen in and join in. We’ll cover the same sort of mix of topics as we do here - news, rumors, apps, jailbreak methods, and tips and tricks. The great thing with TalkShoe is you all can join in - via live chat and via calling in with your comments and questions. If you’re interested, we’ll be putting a badge in the sidebar - but here are the main details:
Just Another iPhone Chat Monday Nights - 10pm US Central time If you register at TalkShoe (free) it makes call-in and all the rest of it a little easier Click the graphic at the top of this post or go HERE to see full details, join the call when it’s live, listen to past episodes (when there are any), download it, subscribe via RSS, and follow us on TalkShoe (please do).
Our rambling and waaaay long trial run is up there now as well :)
Oh - and we would *love* to hear your suggestions for topics you’d like us to cover. Hit us with those in the comments, or via the Tips page at the top of the site. Hope you’ll join us on Mondays …
It is an Evernote kinda week here at JAiB. On Monday I took a look at using Evernote to capture and access pictures of text. Over the next 24 hours Patrick gave away tons of Evernote invitations.
Yes, the iPhone is a great way to get information INTO Evernote. But as Warner Crocker over at GottabBeMobile points out, the iPhone is also a great way to ACCESS the information stored in Evernote.
Read on to see the two simple ways to use the iPhone to ACCESS everything you have stored in Evernote.
Back in December I purchased and reviewed the 6isolator earphones from Eymotic. The were the first high-end earphone’s I had ever bought and over-all I was “wowed” by them. I did have a few reservations, however. I found/find that the exceptionally long (5’) cord is easily tangled and I was disappointed by the lack of an in-line mike. Over-all, though, I liked the 6isolators a lot and described them as “…HD for your ears!”
They quickly became, and have remained, my earphones of choice.
The kind folks at Etymotic have given me a chance to use their new hf2 headset and boy am I impressed. The sound quality is down right amazing. According to Etymotic the hf2 headset offers the same level of accurate sound quality as their premium ER-4P earphones.
If my 6isolators sound “great”, the hf2s sound… well… “greater”.

uShow - the upcoming video recording application for the iPhone that we talked about a little last week, because its preview looks so good - is accepting registrations again.
Presumably the registration is for the beta program for the app - registration for which had been previously closed. The sign-up screen doesn’t give much away, and just promises to send further information to the registered email account within the next 24-48 hours.
You’ll have to cough up your iPhone serial number if you want to register, which you can do now at:
It’s a Bejeweled-like gem matching puzzle game, but the twist is that after getting matched, the gems fall in the direction that the iPhone’s accelerometer tells them to fall. It’s wild stuff …
A few weeks back we told you about the concept of Trism, which was at that time promisng a ’soon-to-be-released’ demo. Looks like Steve D. at Demiforce is a man of his word, as today the Trism demo has been launched.
The game looks great, and even though I severely suck at this type of game, it has already been great fun to play around with. If you’re good at this type of puzzle game, you’re probably going to like this a whole bunch. Hit the jump for a couple more screencaps and some details on plans for the full version …
I have coded fairly extensively with Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Blackberry. iPhone just blows them away, making me wonder who decided that mobile development had to be difficult. — Tom Yager, InfoWorld
