AT&T’s Free WiFi Clarification = It’s Coming Sometime …

AT&T Free WiFi When?

You’ve probably seen, or experienced, a bit of the on again / off again / on again / maybe not again updates over the last week or so about AT&T and free WiFi for iPhone users.  We’ve covered it quite a bit here - first when this service was turned on and usable briefly and afterwards as well.  This week the offering even showed up on AT&T’s iPhone rate plans, only to be taken down after a short time.

Well, now AT&T have broken their public silence on this subject, and spoken to The New York Times about it.  Good stuff you’d think - now we’ll get to the bottom of all of this right?  Not so much though …

The NYT’s chat with an AT&T spokesman yielded this:

I was able to reach Fletcher Cook, an AT&T spokesman, who was able to offer a bit more perspective.

The posting of the offer of free Wi-Fi on the company’s site was “a human error,” he said. But he added that the company has long planned to offer free Wi-Fi to customers with iPhones and other phones that have Wi-Fi capability.

“Our Wi-Fi network is a great way of differentiating the AT&T network and giving customers another reason to choose us over a competitor,” he said. As for details and timing, Mr. Fletcher was mum.

Nice.  Human error several times over it seems like on this one - since the service was available, then not, listed on the rate plan page, then not, and so on.  You’d think after that amount of buggering things up, you might want to just come clean and give a real timeframe for the service.

Maybe they’re a little distracted and off their game due to that ‘exciting launch’ that’s supposed to be keeping their store employees from booking vacations next month …
