Love him or hate him, I think most of us would admit Robert Scoble has some incredibly broad knowledge on all things tech related and particularly software and online apps and services.  I follow him on Twitter and Friendfeed, and have discovered a ton of cool things because of a mention from him.

So it’s very interesting to see what Scoble, and his humungous horde of Twitter followers, rate as the top iPhone applications.  Our friend John Atkinson from PimpMyNews.com let me know by email that a Scoble article in the June 2008 edition of (the printed) Fast Company magazine covers just this topic - and just happens to rate PimpMynews - the service that lets you listen to your favorite sites instead of just reading them each day -  very highly.

Here’s a little more background on the Fast Company article, and why PMN are so pleased about it:

In the June print issue of FastCompany, Robert Scoble did a story on his favorite iPhone apps. According to the story, Scoble polled his 18,000 Twitter users(now 23k) for their input and came up with 18 killer apps. In the news category, PimpMyNews was named a favorite - second only to Google Reader.(Good company to be in;)

Glad to see PMN get some more love, as I’ve liked the service for quite a while (you can find this blog under the Technology > Apple category by the way).  I’m also happy to see that Scoble’s list contains both web apps and some that require jailbreak. Here’s some quick thoughts on the list:

• Google Reader was the most mentioned app of all.  This is no surprise at all - as this app has always been very nice on the iPhone, and just seems to keep getting better and better with each refresh that Google gives it - especially their first real iPhone optimized beta version.
• Amongst photo apps, Twitxr and iFlickr are worthy programs that get mentions, but I was a little surprised not to see Mobile Flickr mentioned, as it offers the most complete set of Flickr tools that I’ve seen on a native (or web) app for the iPhone.
• Similarly, no surprise to see Hahlo listed as a favorite Twitter app - but no mention of Twinkle or Mobile Twitter to represent native Twitter apps is a bit of a shocker.
• Very happy to see the superb TimeCapsule backup program mentioned.  It’s a great app, and is being frequently updated to add support for more and more items to backup.

Oh, and ZiPhone got a mention as the preferred (by Scoble) and most popular jailbreak method.

I’ve not yet been able to find an online version of this Fast Company article, but it is in the June 2008 print issue of Fast Company, and I’ll keep looking for a link to add here …
