Last week’s international iPhone deals revealed some huge potential numbers. A piece in today’s New York Times offers two more interesting numbers with regard to iPhone use.
It turns out that almost half of US iPhone users switched carriers because they wanted an iPhone. Not only that
but, on average, by switching to the iPhone they also ended up with a phone bill that is $19 MORE per month.
Those are great numbers for both Apple and AT&T Wireless. They switched, pay more, and are, overall, happy to have done so. And this even holds true for business users.
Another number, though, is not as positive. The same survey revealed that 36 percent of iPhone users also keep a second cellular device with them. Since the most frequent "2nd device" is the RIM Blackberry, though, one has to wonder if this number is not due, in large part, to the iPhone’s lack of push email. This may well change when MS Exchange comes to the iPhone next month through the upcoming software update.
When I first got an iPhone in August I figured I would keep my old device and use the iPhone as an "entertainment" device. That lasted a week. Although it meant dropping Outloook/MS Exchange and making the move to Gmail, since September, it is my only device.
I’ll be interested to see how this number changes by next fall.
