case-mate Goes Clear with Clear Armor

So anyone that’s heard me talk on the podcast, or had a conversation with me about protecting their iPhone knows I’m a huge fan and believer in the protection offered by InvisibleShield as well as BestSkinsEver. Granted I have a few other cases and they have their uses - for example the iPhone Defender from Otterbox is the first thing I’m packing on my trip to Florida this weekend - but the one “case” that is always on my iPhone is the InvisibleShield. So naturally the first person Patrick thought to send this announcement from Case-Mate to was me.

Now - I’m not going to get into a debate with anyone about which company is best to buy from. I own a skin from InvisibleShield for my iPhone, I’ve got a BestSkinsEver skin on the iPod Touch and each has their own good and bad qualities. What I will say that is going to differentiate case-mate in this game is that for the $19.99 price tag they are not sending just one - but two skins. Now, for something that’s about as close to indestructible as can be, why would you want two? Well, I know more than a few people who have hosed up the first install so bad that they wished they had a second (note: follow the instructions and its not bad at all)… and second if you do take it off as I just did for my trip, its always nice to start with a brand new one when you re-apply later.

Anyway - there’s my blah-blah-blah. Below is the jabber from the press release thing. Oh and click the You Tube link for some hot steamy BlackBerry blender action. Let’s just say there’s a bad little BlackBerry that gets what it deserves after a typical BlackBerry outage.

I don’t know too much about shield protection, so I bought the same one my brother uses that is the iSkin from Revo. I’m happy with it.

I decided for the case instead of just front side shield because: It add protection to the edges, so if I drop the iPhone, it absorbs the impact doing no harm do the iPhone; it doesn’t fall from my pocket when I’m using shorts; it doesn’t slip from my hands when I use both thumbs to write.

But it has some cons too: the iPhone doesn’t look as good, and it looks bigger in your pocket.

I was really attracted by that invisible shield video, because it protects the edges and add some extra grip, keep the iPhone beauty. I’m really considering about changing. But still don’t feel secure about what will happen if it falls from my hand. Will it absorb the impact as well as the rubber case? Does anyone owns one to tell if it’s as good as it look on the video?

i’d be interested to see how this compares to the BSE and Invisible Shield skins. there are a couple of things that have kept me from installing one of these on my iphone - i don’t like the orange peel look they seem to get, even after fully drying, and how the edges around the curved corners can fail to stick fully. i’d get one if these things wouldn’t be issues!

@fluza78 - drop protection = no. But, that skidding action that normally tears a screen up after a drop would be well protected against. To be honest, while a drop is always possible, the skinds we’re talking about here are really grippy so I don’t typically worry too much about it.

@macgirl - The orange peel effect was really annoying at first. But after about 2 days I didn’t “see” it anymore. Its obviously still there but I don’t see it. I guess the eyes adjust to it and after a short while it isn’t something that catches the eye anymore. As for the corners: if you follow the instructions and really take your time its almost a non-event. They take some work to get right, but if you’re willing to put in the effort its definitely worth the improved outcome.

Hopefully we can get one to review… Cough Patrick Cough
