We had a commenter (mas90guru - our friend Wayne from Gear Diary) mention recently that it would be interesting to hear what apps we’re currently running on our iPhones.
As we’re getting closer and closer to the iPhone 2.0 and App Store launches next month, this seems a good time to share what apps we’re using, which ones we use the most, and all that sort of thing. So I’ll start the ball rolling on this one, and if Dan or Brandon or any of our other contributors want to chime in, great.
One thing Wayne’s suggestion, and thinking about this topic, has made me realize is that I’ve got too many apps cluttering up my multiple home screens and it’s probably past time for a bit of Spring cleaning in this area. So I’m not going to try to mention every single application I’ve got installed. Rarher, here’s my quick rundown of some of my favorites on my iPhone right now, along with some comments on which apps are most used …

Hmmm. BMW has got a page on their site welcoming ‘the new iPhone’ and touting how well it work with most BMW models:
It’s the kind of innovative forethought you expect from BMW: the new Apple iPhone is here, and it’s compatible with most BMW models from day one. The communication and music functionalities of the Apple iPhone can easily be operated with the in-vehicle control elements and displays. All you need besides the new Apple iPhone to make a call, listen to music or access your address book in a BMW is the "USB/audio interface" and a suitable mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface. Enjoy your iPhone and your BMW in parallel, for the sheer pleasure of both worlds.
Sounds good. Yet another sign of the impending arrival of … something … a 3G model, a 3G and V2 model? At any rate, I assume all these features will be coming to my Kia any day now as well
I’ve been meaning to do a post about the Mobile News NetworkiPhone optimized site for weeks now, as it was an instant favorite for me when it launched, and it has continued to be my favorite news site on the iPhone ever since.
The site is run by the Associated Press (AP). Recently I’ve seen a few reports speculating that the AP (Associated Press) are planning an iPhone native app for the App Store and would like to work their way into being a default home screen app on the iPhone. Right now, I’d be in favor of that, as I think they’ve already done a superb job with their optimized site.
To say that xClock is a simple application would be an understatement. It’s a big, analog clock for your iPhone.
That’s it - just a clock - but it’s a full screen, fairly good-looking clock (IMO). I like it, will probably keep it around for staring at during boring meetings
xClock is available on Installer now, from the BigBoss’s Apps and Things source, which is:
Ok so, gaming on the iphone/touch is coming, it’s inevitable, and it’s going to be OH SO sweet! You’ve seen all the jailbroken emulators with their tiny touchscreen control pads and claims that “It’s like the real thing!” Yea, well, forget all that…iControlPad launching in tee-minus 3, 2…soon! http://www.icontrolpad.com/
The iControlPad is an accessory that slides onto the iPhone and adds hardware buttons and a joypad, in a PSP sort of form factor.
We have our first prototype put together and the design works very well, we don’t have the Start and Select buttons on this version but don’t worry they will be in the final set up. The current system is slightly smaller than the PSP and feels very nice to hold and use.
The iPhone is locked perfectly in place when in the control pad.
And yes, we plan to make an iTouch version too!
I’ve mentioned before that I’m a fan of moleskine, the powerful note-taking app that offers *a lot* more features than the built-in iPhone Notes program.
I’m also very impressed with the way Databinge keep the frequent updates flowing for this and their other apps, and keep adding quite substantial and cool features all the time.
The latest one that has really got me finding more and more potential uses for moleskine is the ability to email notes, and also to choose to email notes with voice note attachments - so you get an .amr file just like you do out of the VNotes app.
This is really becoming a do-it-all Notes program - letting you organize notes into folders and sub-folders, use themes, tilt to revert back to previous screen, add voice notes as well as text notes, and mail them to yourself or others easily.
The latest version of moleskine is 0.46b1 - and it’s out on Installer now. You may need to add the Databinge source to see it, which is:
There are plenty of over-ambitious web apps (and native ones for that matter) for the iPhone. Once in a while, it’s good to see a super simple one with an interesting purpose. Last night I was catching up on some of the newest web app offerings, spotted Word of the Day, and liked it enough to bookmark it.
WOTD was created by ‘The Nerd of NYC’ (great nomme de plume for apps developing) and uses words from dictionary.com.
I like it because it’s got a simple, single purpose and because it’s got an easy, comfortable self-improvement slant to it. I know, there are a zillion ways I could aspire to improve myself each day - but this one is just sooooo easy I just might make use of it on a regular basis - maybe even pick up a few words to share with my daughter now and again.

Hey hey - here’s something kinda fun and nice for the weekend if you’re a fan of Firefox - a ‘theme’ for Safari on the iPhone that adds a distinct Fox flavor to it.
It’s by MMi forum member Hellbuster. I’m a big Firefox fan - especially of the blazing fast new Version 3 of it - and I like this skin quite a bit. Although it feels like it will take me a bit to get used to the different icons and buttons on it, it works nicely and looks good.
This is not in Installer yet, so you’ll need to check this MMi thread for download details.
The downloaded folder comes with a ReadMe file that provides short instructions on where you’ll need to copy files to in order to apply this skin. You’ll also need to respring and exit and re-open Safari for the changes to take effect.
Here’s to not ever seeing an IE skin - pleeeeze ….
One of the first iPhone cases I had the opportunity to review here at JAiB was the Otterbox Defender Series.
Back in December I referred to it as the “SUV of iPhone Cases”. Six months later it continues to be the case I use whenever I need added protection for my iPhone.
Now Otterbox is offering a case that does good for your iPhone AND others.
As the Otterbox site explains,
Having the strength to overcome obstacles can be one of life’s biggest challenges. But imagine the amount of strength it would take to overcome breast cancer. For all the lives impacted by breast cancer every year, the word strength takes on a whole new meaning. The strength to fight…the strength to endure…the strength to heal. By purchasing an OtterBox for iPhone or iPod nano 3rd Generation Defender™ Series Strength case, 10% of the purchase price will be donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade to support access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. Together we have the strength to fight breast cancer.
Apple could even give Nintendo a run for its money – playing video games on the iPhone is a joy, with users simply having to tilt and rotate the iPhone to control the actions of on-screen characters. — The Telegraph
