Statistic– iPhone Share Down; Prediction- Not for Long

According to a recent IDC survey Apple’s share of the smartphone market dropped significantly in the first quarter of 2008.

The numbers speak for themselves.

During Q4 of 2007 the iPhone held 26.7 percent of the market.
During Q1 of 2008 that number dropped to 19.2.

Where did it go?

Unsurprisingly RIM jumped from 35.1% to 44.5% of the market.

More surprisingly Palm went from 7.9% to 13.4% in large part due to the positive consumer reception of the Centro.
(Full disclosure- against my objections my wife got one last week and LOVES it!)

Another big loser was Motorola who dropped from 7.5% to 2.6% in the first.

With the 3G iPhone and firmware 2.0 (which will include support for MS Exchange and a likely revamping of .Mac to support OTA syncing) on the way however, I think we will be seeing the numbers shift again over the next few quarters and it will be in Apple’s favor in a huge way.
