Day 2 (or maybe 2.5) of the iPhone App Store, and I’ve just seen its Updates feature in action for the first time.
As you’d expect, when there is an update available, it shows you the little red number badge on its home screen icon to indicate that an update is available – as shown in the screenshot above left. In this case it is the AP’s Mobile News Network that has been updated.
It’s nice to see that you can tap to see the contents of the update (see the screencap on the right) to help decide whether / how quickly you may want to apply the update.
Also good to see Mobile News Network updated so quickly and adding some new news sections.

Do you need to manually open the App Store to check for updates? I’d imagine Apple would use their PNS (Push Notification Service) for this very purpose, but PNS isn’t rolled out until September?
If manual checks are not required, that’s one point for the App Store in the Installer vs App Store battle.
iamse7en – good question – I’m no positive of the answer as I can’t recall whether I had just recently opened the App Store app just before the update badge / icon showed up. I think not – think it did just show up, but I need to wait and see with another update or two to give a better answer …
