We are pleased to announce the launch of Last.fm on the iPhone and iPod Touch! Sam Steele, our iPhone development army of one, has been cranking away at a full blown Last.fm app on Apple’s mobile platforms for months now and the results are nothing short of insanely great.
Last.fm has launched their iPhone app today in the iPhone App Store - it’s available now and is a free app.
I’ve only just installed it a little while ago and started trying it out, but so far I like it quite a bit. It looks just great, with lots of good graphics throughout its interface. It’s also got a number of good tabs / sections to keep you busy - Similar Artists and various recommended areas to browse and listen to. You can mark a track as Loved or Banned easily as well.
There are definitely a few places where things could be a bit better as well - a couple places where it would seem you should be able to tap to play and you cannot (e.g. Charts / Top Albums). Also, the app is hampered by Apple’s no running in the background rules - when you close it down, it stops playing - and does not remember where you were when you go back into it - at least that second part (remembering / reviving your session) should be improved in future updates.
Overall, this app looks quite good on first spin though. Give it a look and let us know what you think of it …

fzelders - good point, it is only available in a small handful of countries so far. They are apparently working hard on this - check out their Last.fm blog post on the launch of the app, which mentions the international distro / licensing towards the end:

[...] Last.fm App Streams Tunes Directly to Your iPhone -iPhone/iPod touch only: Free music discovery service Last.fm has launched its own iPhone/iPod touch 2.0 app, and it does exactly what you’d hope it would, with a few caveats. The interface is straightforward and simple, at least for experienced Last.fm users—launch the app, then choose from your “Recommended Radio” or enter an artist name to hear other tracks you might like. You can ban, skip, or “Love” tracks while they’re playing, and get artist bios and other information. The big downside (inherent to the iPhone) is the lack of backgroung playing, so you’ve got to keep the Last.fm app up while you’re streaming your music. At the same time, the app makes Safari recognize direct
lastfm://
links for convenient linking and playing.
