aSubnet - What free should be

Well, the App Store is here, and like everyone else I imagine I’ve been dutifully checking out all the goodies that are fit to download. Unlike most though I have yet to buy anything. I have some lined up and I’ll be buying shortly, but I imagine like many people - I’m checking out the freebies first.

So tonight I thought I’d mention what a really good free app (IMHO) should be like - and here’s a great example. Everybody say hi to aSubnet:

I just found this in the App Store and I’ve been playing with it for a little while, but I can already tell this great little free application is going to be one of my favorites. Why? Because its useful and simple. Its easy to figure out, it doesn’t have a ton of bells and whistles, but it serves a much needed purpose. Sure maybe not to people who don’t do a lot of network/server stuff … but that’s not my point.

My point here is that for the low, low price of free … I don’t expect a free application to include everything and the kitchen sink. I expect a free application to either be something trivial or funny (like Moo by Erica Sadun) or I expect it to serve a basic purpose and serve that purpose elegantly and simply which is exactly what aSubnet does.

So - for the cost of free - what is everybody else looking for? Are you trying to find an all-in-one solution for something or are you looking for a few different applications like aSubnet that provide a single (but much needed) solution? Are you getting what you want from the free stuff? Are you getting something free - but really think its worth paying for?
