How I WinPwned to 2.0.1

[Disclaimer: still playing with Flock, can't preview posts while doing this, so pic location may be a little crazy]
Ok, so it was kind of a long road for me this time. It’s been a lot of shouting and cursing, but I figured I’d blog about it real quick so others might have it a bit easier.
Here’s how I went about upgrading the first time. I downloaded WinPwn 2.0.0.4, the 2.0.1 firmware, as well as the bootloaders (3.9 and 4.6). I followed the instructions at iClarified just like I did last time, put the iPhone in DFU mode, and utterly failed. Phailed. Flailed. The problem here was that iTunes refused to recognize the firmware I was making and would give me an error saying “iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6″. There are a lot of posts about this everywhere, but there were a few people here and there who claimed they were successful, so how’d they do it?
I won’t beat around the bush here: they used the new Partition Resizer tab in WinPwn and set it to something more than the default 500 MB. I didn’t know how much this would affect me so I just set it to 600 MB, but I’ve read people putting in as much as 1000. In any case, this was the key to my being able to upgrade. I’d tried for hours and hours re-downloading, re-pwning, restoring, and regurgitating. I’m going to sleep now while my music syncs.
Good night! Hope you folks have better luck!

Wow, Normally i’m the one who has a helluva time updating his phone. The last time i had to restore several times before it worked. I downloaded 2.0.0.4 like mear seconds after it was posted. Ran though the iClarified how-to as well. Although i didn’t mess with the partition size, i havn’t had a problem with that being too small so far. And worked like a charm. Although, you’d think apple could do something about the restore time. I mean, how long does it take to xfer data over usb2.0?? it took mine almost an hr! Anyways, glad it finally worked for you. I havn’t noticed much of a difference between 2.0 and 2.0.1, txt msging does seem a bit more snappy, but thats about it.

Hahaha, well glad you had an easier time
I am happy about the new version though. My contacts and calendar open up quickly like they did before. SMS is maybe just a bit faster, but I can’t be sure yet since I have ONE message at the moment, hahaha.

How easily to you get into DFU? I’m having a hell of a time kicking my phone into it. i swear I’ve tried 500 times.

Here’s the tip I found on a Youtube vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTcKMZfyfk
So connect your iPhone and then hold power + home until you hear your computer make the “device disconnected” sound, at which point you let go of the power button. Keep holding on the home button until you hear the ‘device connected’ sound and let go of the home button.
The screen will stay blank, your iPhone will show up in iTunes in recovery mode, and you’ll be in DFU mode and can break out champagne.

There’s my problem - I have no clue what this “device connected” sound is. I’m pretty sure it’s a PC thing - I use Macs.

DFU - Just hold the Power and Home Button at the same time until your device switches off completely (ignore the red switch off button the will appear on the screen), then release de power button (but keep on holding the home button). In a few seconds you’ll see the connect to Itunes image. Just connect your iphone cable and you are off…
My update went perfectly fine. I just had to repeat it because i forgot to select the darn activate You Tube option…

I’m having extreme difficulties getting this done. I have a 3G iPhone trying to jailbreak to 2.0.1 and I keep getting
iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)
Note that it’s not the standard 6 that, as far as I can tell, EVERYONE else gets. I’ve tried every type of ipsw build I could think of. Changed the size, everything from 500 to 1000 in 100mb increments. Tried turning off the baseband update as I don’t really need it unlocked. Nothing works, get that error every time and I can’t find anything online about that pertaining to 2.0.1 or even 2.0. Anyone have any clue what that means?
Doing a standard restore after working on this for 8 hours. I’m giving up until tomorrow =/

Oh, I did find one thing about it not being in the right restore mode, but I’m very positive it’s in DFU mode. Have a completely blank screen, and iTunes gives me the same message as in the iClarified howto.

@rjorgenson
Error 1? Yeah, I got 6 like everybody else. What the heck does (1) even mean?
Did you try un-checking Cydia for installation? That helped some people when making the ipsw. I also heard stuff about clicking only the “activate phone” in the advanced tab, but it seems like you did that in your comment about the baseband.
Ohh — have you tried downloading other people’s working IPSW’s here?

The links are down right now, but they say new ones should be up soon.

So I feel dumb now, apparently I followed the ‘latest’ firmware download link on the iClarified howto which linked to the iPhone1,1_2.0.1 firmware which appears to be for the 1st gen iPhone, I found the iPhone1,2_2.0.1 firmware and jailbroke without any problems with a 500MB root size too. Restoring now =)

So the restore didn’t work out to well, so I started from scratch and now my phone doesn’t get on the AT&T network =/ Any ideas on that?

Apparently if you aren’t planning on running on a non-qualified network, for example ATT, my provider, you are not supposed to activate the phone. Built a new ipsw without the activate and it’s working now, syncing my music as we speak, gonna go crash
