Tris – like Tetris minus one vowel and consonant!

Marines, get some! Ok, so that has nothing to do with this post. I’ve just  been watching too much Generation Kill on HBO. But when I’m not watching high quality mini-series about marines in Iraq, I like to spend a bit of time gaming on my iPhone. And what better way to burn a few minutes (hours) than with a free and ridiculously good-looking Tetris clone called Tris. The game was on Installer in the pre-2.0 days, but it’s now official and in the App Store and has a real uniform and everything!

Hit the jump for a quick look at the game, and what to expect.

I think the control scheme is one of the better ones I’ve played with on the iPhone. You tap the screen to rotate a block or drag your finger along the left side of the screen to move a block. The blocks have a beautiful glow as they fall, which eventually fades away as they come to rest and give you some monster points in combos. It would be great to have a more flashy animation for when you clear a whole line of blocks, but otherwise all of the animations are great. I’m not a Tetris fan myself, but this game just goes to show how much good presentation can accomplish. Here’s a post of my super high score to get you revved up and achieve your own:

As a cool little bonus you can see the high scores of people around the world. I’m apparently one of the best players…on my iPhone.

Another great feature is the auto-save function. Any time you get a call or press the home button, you should always be able to come back to your game by just re-launching it. It’ll load up paused and you can continue from there.

I stop talking now. You enjoy!
