Marines, get some! Ok, so that has nothing to do with this post. I’ve just been watching too much Generation Kill on HBO. But when I’m not watching high quality mini-series about marines in Iraq, I like to spend a bit of time gaming on my iPhone. And what better way to burn a few minutes (hours) than with a free and ridiculously good-looking Tetris clone called Tris. The game was on Installer in the pre-2.0 days, but it’s now official and in the App Store and has a real uniform and everything!
Hit the jump for a quick look at the game, and what to expect.
Having come from Windows Mobile one of my favorite time wasters was Jawbreaker. Well we may not have that WinMo classic on the iPhone but the (very cheap) reMovem with it’s four game modes is the next best thing. I’ve been playing the free version since I came across it in the Appstore a short while ago - and seeing the pay version show up tonight, buying it was pretty much a no-brainer.

Let’s keep this one brief from my side of things - this is a great article for people like me who are having a hard time filtering through all the crapware out in the Appstore. This list by iLounge is completely personal opinion on their part … but its still a pretty strong list and I agree with many of their top choices.
“Over the past month, we’ve spent many hours testing iPhone and iPod touch applications—yes, enduring all the bad apps, data corruption, crashes, and forced restores of our devices along the way. But today, we wanted to highlight the good guys, companies that have developed especially impressive iPhone OS software and will likely do even better in the future. So we’ve created this list of the Top Ten iPhone App Developers Worth Caring About, along with a brief list of honorable and not-so-honorable mentions at the end.
Because both the App Store and the top app lists are dominated by games, so too is our list of noteworthy developers; however, our list isn’t in ranked order. There are, of course, others who we think are worthy of future mention; we will look at them in a later article.”
When I saw this in my RSS feeds I stopped and wondered how I could have missed this one hitting that Appstore. Then I remembered … I saw the app get added and I totally figured it was another picture-flip type of thing. Boy was I wrong!
“Watch It Change works using the iPhone’s built-in camera. You create a project with the movie’s title, add credits, the create your film. You can share what you’ve done on the Watch It Change Web site, where they also sell a special stand developed to hold the iPhone in place while you’re making your shots.”
Stop on into the Appstore to pick this one up. Reading through it seems like this was not only a great way to sell a unique application, but also a great way to get a few accessory sales! Brilliant!
Best Buy has announced that they will begin selling the iPhone on September 7 at their nearly 1,000 stores, becoming the first retailer besides Apple and AT&T to do so. Apple cited the good relationship with Best Buy, who currently sells Macintosh computers, iPods, and accessories, as one of the main reasons for allowing Best Buy to sell the iPhone.
Well, if you’re gonna do something by yourself … you might as well do it right, and the folks at iLounge are definitely on track to make sure that when you sit down to play some Solitaire, you aren’t going to waste your money on junk.
Only a month has passed since the App Store opened, and thanks to 12 separate developers, there are literally 19 different Solitaire card games to choose from today for the iPhone and iPod touch - you’d have to spend $75 to try them all. So that’s what we’ve done, canvassing the entire collection of titles to help you decide which one or two will be best for you.
So, while I’m sorry to say they have us licked on this one (I haven’t even downloaded a solitaire game yet), I’m happy to give you a link to a great round-up of games that will absolutely help make sure you’re not wasting you’re hard earned Appstore cash.
Simplify Media is another jailbreak fan favorite that has hit the big top (iTunes Appstore) and is ready for consumption by the general masses who haven’t or won’t jailbreak the new 2.0 software. What is it you ask? Well the folks over at Lifehacker put it better than I think I could …
Freeware application SimplyMedia shares iTunes libraries over the internet, giving you access to shared libraries no matter where you are. That means you can install Simplify Media at home and work to get access to your entire home music library from work (assuming both ends have a fast enough connection to stream your MP3s). If you’ve got a few friends with libraries you want to access, you can add up to 30 shared libraries.
And now (thanks Lifehacker) you can download the iPhone app for free (for the first 100,000) people! After that the price goes up to a (still reasonable) $3.99. Anyway, hurry on over and grab this great freebie while you still can. The desktop version by the way is also free.
Pretty near the top of the list of most used applications on my V1 iPhone was a jailbreak app from databinge called moleskine. Moleskine has been heavily covered and favored on JAiB and I figure while there’s not much sense in covering all the details again, but I wanted to let you know you can plan on a review coming up on this one. I’ve just ponied up my $12.99 for the (+) version of moleskinery and so far I can honestly say I’m glad I did… this is one of those familiar faces from the jailbreak community that I’m happy to see back on my homescreen.
Ok so here’s just a quick thing I found out just now with a little bit of playing around. It might be obvious, but it certainly mystified me for a while. So there’s this little setting under Settings –> Fetch New Data –> Advanced where you can tell your Exchange account to only sync manually. This is fine for Mail with its refresh button, but what about Contacts and Calendar?
The key here seems to be just loading the programs up, which seems to start the sync process. The thing is, since you don’t initiate the thing, there’s no easy way to tell (AFAIK) when your sync is done. So beware of times when you’ve done a lot of work on your desktop calendar but haven’t opened Calendar on the iPhone. Maybe leave Calendar/Contacts on for a few minutes to make sure everything gets downloaded.
That’s all for now, folks. Hope that helps a few of you out there looking to save a bit of juice. I like Nuevasync for push PIM with Google, but I don’t need contacts and events updated live. My life’s just not that fast
This past week has been somewhat frustrating for me. You see I’ve been waiting for DataCase to hit the Appstore for some time now - and all last week all Apple seemed to be approving was crap. Sure there may have been a few decent apps out the last few days but I figure there was just about enough shit to sink a ship. All the while I was sitting there knowing that DataCase was just waiting in the wings. Now its here (finally) and I’m really looking forward to giving this app a run for my money.
As they said on their website and in the description it’s really easy to use (for the most part), but its a bit buggy in this first version. For Example, rotating a large PDF can take a lot longer than it should - like this one where I managed to stare at this screen for about 20 seconds…
Apple could even give Nintendo a run for its money – playing video games on the iPhone is a joy, with users simply having to tilt and rotate the iPhone to control the actions of on-screen characters. — The Telegraph
