Review: OtterBox Defender for iPhone 3G

IMG_0184

Fanboy is not a term I use lightly. I don’t consider myself a fanboy of Apple - maybe of the iPhone, and I usually don’t consider myself to be a fanboy of any particular brand of accessory. But, in this case I’m going to come right out and just tell you - I am a fanboy when it comes to OtterBox. This is now the second Defender series case I’ve owned (had one for the original iPhone) and like a fine wine this new version has only gotten better with age. The design changes are quite significant in the latest version and while it hasn’t been all roses (see the part where I hurt myself) - overall I’m still very impressed.

Like the first iPhone version - the package content for the OtterBox is fairly thin. There isn’t a whole lot of documentation and there really doesn’t need to be since really this is a case and its fairly self explanatory on how you use it. Other than that you’re going to get an OtterBox sticker (love this) and the Defender itself.

Google Earth Now Available!

  image

Those of you from the New York Metropolitan area might remember the electronics store "Crazy Eddie", who always ran a Christmas sale in August.

Well, Google has given us Christmas in October.   While you could expect that Google would be focused on Android, their own smartphone OS, apparently the iPhone love continues unabated as Google has released their much-loved geo-exploration tool for the iPhone.   Yes, Google Earth is now available at the App Store.

Check out Topple and MazeFinger!

So I was turned onto some new games this weekend. One costs $0.99 and one is completely free – but they’re both freaking fantastic for burning a few minutes.

photo Topple (shown left) is a really great twist on the Tetris idea. Instead of stacking blocks and avoiding a top line, you have to balance them on top of one another (you can also tilt them with the accelerometer) until you reach a certain height. The catch? The ground you’re playing on isn’t always flat, and you’ve got to stack the blocks before the time runs out. It’s an absolute STEAL at $0.99 and everyone has to check this game out. It’s beautiful!

photo (1)Mazefinger is the company’s other game, and it’s completely free. It consists of mazes that you have to guide your finger through. When you put your finger on the screen you’re half blinded by lightning that shoots onto the spot you press, and you’ve got to find your way to the end of the maze before time runs out. The part I love most about this game? The sound. It literally shouts your score at you at the end of each maze as well as at the end of each level (consisting of five mazes). There’s nothing like your iPhone shouting “AWESOME!” at you five times in a row. Did I mention it was free?

Thanks to touchtip

Double Review: Sena iPhone Dockable Case and Sena UltraSlim Pouch

Resized 2 1

If you think about it it’s kinda funny that we love our high tech goods in leather. We’ve got all this shiny plastic and metal and we protect it with ridiculously old technology. But somehow it works, and it does a heck of a job protecting the device, too.

Today JAiB’s microscope falls upon the two cases from Sena for the iPhone (and iPhone 3G — for one of ‘em). One is a simple leather slip case and the other lets you dock without ever having to take the phone out of its protective shell. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Sena from friends of mine, so I was pretty anxious to check these cases out.

Hit the jump for a full review with lots of pictures.

Review: BodyGuardz for iPhone 3G

IMG_9653

So this one’s been a long time coming … like since the launch of the iPhone 3G. Hey, better late than never.

Story Time. Since the original iPhone I’ve been a big fan of skin style protection for my devices and during that time I’ve been a proponent of two specific products, the InvisibleShield by Zagg and the bestskinsever skins. These two companies have been on my list for two distinct reasons: Price (bestskinsever) and warranty (InvisibleShield). Now, truth is you’re likely not going to find a better deal price wise than bestskinsever. That’s just reality since they sell the skins at rock bottom prices and they are comparable to both InvisibleShield and BodyGuardz. However, when it comes to a shootout between the InvisibleShield and BodyGuardz, it quickly starts to turn into a deathmatch.

Why you ask? Well, because when you have two products similar in scope, price and warranty, you end up with the inevitable - constant comparisons and people who are on one side of the fence or another. So, rather than tell you which side I’m on, I’m going to give you a look at the product and let you make your own decisions.

Dinner Dash Comes Racing to my iPhone

Picture 2.png

So, as I’m sure some of you will remember I threw out a rant a while ago about this particular game, over games pricing, and a few other issues I saw with the App Store at the time. Now for some time (over a month) Dinner Dash has been available in the App Store at nearly $10. I swore during that rant I wouldn’t buy it for that price because I thought it was too high.

Here we are a month later and PlayFirst is having a 50% off sale on Dinner Dash. And true to my word - I made an impulse buy and picked it up. After playing through the first round (got my second restaurant) - I’m putting this on the recommended buy list (at $4.99). I still don’t place this as a $10 game, but at $4.99 (like I mentioned before) they’ve hit the sweet spot and the game is definitely worth it for the sale price.

I’ll do a review later I’m sure….

Review: Brando’s iPower Portable Power Station with Speaker

Resized 5

Today we’re taking a look at Brando’s iPower charger for the iPhone (well, 3G, really). It’s a relatively rare breed of chargers that actually fit on the devices they charge. I’ve taken a look at the Mophie charger over on JAMM but Brando offers a similar sled charging form factor for a just under half the price. The 2200 maH battery on this model sounds like it’ll give a fair amount more power and they’ve even thrown in a boosted speaker in the back for some added value. Hit the jump to see how this affordable charger/speaker set fares!

AppShopper.Com - My New Favorite App Site

It seems like just a few days ago (because it was) that I sang the praises of 148apps.com for its feature that allows you to see recent price drops of applications.

Turns out that an even better site exists: AppShopper.com.

Fake Russian iPhones show cool Apple logo…

Technorati Tags:

and that’s it. According to Gizmodo, these rip-offs contain just enough circuitry and power to show you the apple logo when you boot them up. The premise is that the battery is broken, but it probably looks real if the price is low enough for a person to buy a phone with dead batteries. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of the batteries and Rutger Hauer plays the role of the Apple logo. It’s all a very good show. This rip-off makes the Meizu M8 look like a king.
