Those of you from the New York Metropolitan area might remember the electronics store "Crazy Eddie", who always ran a Christmas sale in August.

Well, Google has given us Christmas in October.   While you could expect that Google would be focused on Android, their own smartphone OS, apparently the iPhone love continues unabated as Google has released their much-loved geo-exploration tool for the iPhone.   Yes, Google Earth is now available at the App Store.

image I’ve had a few minutes to put Google Earth through its paces and am pleased to report that it sports an excellent interface (complete with accelerometer support to tilt the view up and down) that replicates much of what is available on the desktop version.

What isn’t yet as beefed up as the desktop version is content — many of the excellent layers that can be overlaid on the desktop version are not available — yet?   However, Wikipedia articles and geotagged photos are already in place.

Google Earth is a free download at the App Store.

Google Earth for the iPhone is a good complement to its desktop counterpart, but with a few neat additions. Like on the desktop version, you can search for an address and view it from far away or as close as almost street level, seeing an overhead shot of the location as if you were a few feet above the building.
