If you haven’t heard of JAVOedge yet - well you haven’t been hanging around here very long - because we’ve covered JAVOedge extensively over the past couple years here on JAiB and JAMM. (Just check the search, you’ll see.)
Anyway, our good friend Kevin over at JAVOedge just dropped us a line to let everyone know that this coming Monday (cyber) through Wednesday (regular) they’re throwing open the gates and giving everyone a 35% discount … but not just on one or two things … but EVERYTHING 35% OFF!
Now that Best Buy is selling the iPhone, it would appear that all is not quite so rosy for the consumer, who should be benefiting from the increased sales competition. Apparently, Best Buy is counting on new iPhone customers not to do any price comparisons, because they are selling the iPhone 3G Dock for a good $20.00 more than Apple itself charges.
Ok - Seriously, if you didn’t know this yet - you’re either waaaay busier than I am, or this is the only blog you read. Either way I’m sorry but I’ve no great insights for you into this particular event. I’ve been too busy to even really dig into the new firmware (short of getting it installed) and since I’m on a new MacBook “pwning” my phone is currently not possible anyway. So, rather than waste your time with my haven’t touched it yet thoughts - here’s some links to folks in the know:
OK, so it’s obviously not true, but that’s what it feels like. The 2.2 update has vastly improved the performance of not just the core OS of the iPhone but of all of the installed apps, both native and from the App Store. The AP News app, for example, used to take 10-20 seconds to refresh a news category - now it takes 2-4. Even apps that took an eternity to load (Such as X-Plane) now load substantially and remarkably faster. The stability is greatly improved thus far as well - X-Plane used to require a reboot immediately before play unless you wanted it to crash within 60 seconds or so. That appears to be no longer the case. In fact, with the exception of Safari crashing once, I haven’t had ANY app crashes yet; I would have expected a few by now prior to the update.
Given that Apple obviously did a lot of work to Safari in the 2.2 update, it is surprising to see that one of the biggest 2.1 bugs did not get fixed: Links to applications in the App Store still do not work, giving an error instead of opening the App Store program.
The other 2.1 bug that hasn’t been fixed: Safari still does not honor META REFRESH tags, meaning that redirecting users from one web page to another still does not work.
As an update to our report that AT&T’s hotspots were now open to iPhone users, I did have the opportunity to try it out recently on a trip and am pleased to report that it works pretty well. Once connected, you are redirected in Safari to a page that asks for your phone number. An SMS is then sent to your phone with a link that, when clicked, grants you 24 hours worth of access.
My one quibble? There is a pretty quick inactivity timeout — so if you stop accessing the hotspot for more than a few minutes (say, to take a phone call - and Exchange Sync apparently is not enough activity), you will be forced to click that SMS link again to regain access. It’s not a show-stopper per se, but it could be avoided. I ran into the issue multiple times over a short (1 hour) stay.
Unless you were incommunicado today, you’ve probably already heard that the 2.2 update for the iPhone was released today. The update fixes some reliability issues and introduces some new features. For a first look, read on!
Sorry folks, you’re not going to get a full review out me on this one on opening day, but I can tell you I had a chance to spend sometime with King’s Corners during the beta period, and its actually quite a bit of fun. Now, this is not a game you’re going to spend hours and hours straight playing (maybe)… its one you’re going to find you spend a lot of time playing in small time segments like when you’re waiting for your doctor, or a friend. It’s the perfect time waster game where you only have a couple minutes between events. Anyway the game is out now, retails at 99 cents (iTunes), and frankly is well worth the buck!

Alright, so this review took me longer than it should have. You really shouldn’t experiment with multiple machine syncing when you’re reviewing what is essentially an RPG. I was about a quarter through the game and I ended up destroying my save file by syncing all my applications all over again. Ugh!
In any case, I’m back on track now and ready to give you fine folk the heads-up on Soul Trapper for the iPhone. This one’s pretty different from any other title we’ve seen on the App Store, as it’s a fully voice-driven adventure with very little graphical input. But is it any fun? Or is it more of an interactive audio book?
What do you do when a box shows up at your door one day and you haven’t been expecting it? Well, you do what I do when stuff from JAVOedge shows up - you rip it open like its Christmas morning. This time though I was in for a HUGE shock - this particular box (which again I wasn’t expecting) had not one, not two but over twenty cases in it! Naturally, I sent an email to my friends at JAVOedge and made sure they really meant to send this to me - because frankly I thought maybe they made a mistake. Turns out I was wrong, they really did mean to send all these cases to me, and they really did want me to review them and better yet they want me to give them away! So, I will be doing that soon - I’m just not quite sure yet how to do that, so make sure you keep an eye on the site because I’ll figure out how to do it soon.
