Erica Sadun has an interesting piece over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog which laments the uber-slow Edge data speed connection.
It is a good read- especially if you have found yourself humming the Carly Simon song more than once while waiting for a web page to load.
Just a few days ago my response would have been,
"Yeah, Edge stinks but who cares– June 9th is almost here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
That was before last week’s rumors that the 3G iPhone might see a bit of a delay.

One of the first iPhone cases I had the opportunity to review here at JAiB was the Otterbox Defender Series.
Back in December I referred to it as the “SUV of iPhone Cases”. Six months later it continues to be the case I use whenever I need added protection for my iPhone.
Now Otterbox is offering a case that does good for your iPhone AND others.
As the Otterbox site explains,
Having the strength to overcome obstacles can be one of life’s biggest challenges. But imagine the amount of strength it would take to overcome breast cancer. For all the lives impacted by breast cancer every year, the word strength takes on a whole new meaning. The strength to fight…the strength to endure…the strength to heal.
By purchasing an OtterBox for iPhone or iPod nano 3rd Generation Defender™ Series Strength case, 10% of the purchase price will be donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade to support access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. Together we have the strength to fight breast cancer.

There is mounting speculation that the upcoming 3G iPhone will be an evolutionary step forward rather than a huge leap.
According to a new Piper Jaffray research note the 3G iPhone will not be a reinvention of the product. That will have to wait until early 2009.
Rather, the 3G iPhone will be similar in almost all regards with the exception of a thicker (and plastic?) case, necessary to house the 3G chipset and/or a thicker battery to mitigate the battery drain of the high speed chip.
All that will change come January when, as Piper senior analyst Gene Munster put it

Good news for lovers of ebooks!
In a recent post over at the Mobileread forums "Nate the great" wrote–

"By the end of the year Mobipocket will release upated readers for the various platforms, as well as release a new reader for the Apple iPhone."
Many have been hoping (and assuming) that one of the early new applications brought to the iPhone in the next months will be the ability to read ebooks.
In fact Mike Cane went so far as to declare all other ereaders DEAD.
Nate’s post not only confirms that it WILL happen but that it will happen in the not too distant future.
In response to Nate’s post Kevin Tofel over at JKOnTheRun asks- "iPhone getting a Mobipocket eBook client. What’s that mean for Amazon’s Kindle?"
I have one recent Kindle purchaser’s answer…

Since I first got my iPhone in August I have been looking for a good portable speaker system to use with it.
It still boggle’s my mind that almost a year after it was first released the number of speaker systems that can be used with the iPhone without first having to put it into Flight Mode can be counted on one hand.

Is it THAT difficult to add enough shielding to prevent the horrid “GSM BUZZZZZZZZ” from destroying your music and your ears?
Thankfully a few shielded systems are finally emerging and while the choices remain limited, the items within that limited choice are pretty impressive. A quick look at the Apple Store reveals

iHome iP99BR Clock Radio & Audio System,

Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker System for iPhone,

JBL On Stage 200ID Loudspeaker Dock and the

JBL On Stage IIIP Portable Loudspeaker Dock.
Priced between $149 and $199 each system has largely similar specs so the choice of one over the other comes down to individual needs and taste.
As the title of this post reveals, after spending (too much) time in my local Apple Store (aka “geek nirvana”) I opted for the JBL On Stage IIIP.
The company describes IIIP as

Last week’s international iPhone deals revealed some huge potential numbers. A piece in today’s New York Times offers two more interesting numbers with regard to iPhone use.
It turns out that almost half of US iPhone users switched carriers because they wanted an iPhone. Not only that

More international iPhone deals were announced today- this time by France Telecom’s Orange subsidiary. This adds ten MORE countries to the exploding list of nations in which the iPhone will be available.
That means, according to AppleInsider, that in JUST THE LAST TWO WEEKS Apple quadrupled the market in which the iPhone will be available. They note that, according to Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster,
Currently Apple’s total addressable market includes 153 million subscribers in 6 countries with AT&T, T-Mobile Germany and Austria, O2, and Orange. These announcements increase those numbers to 575 million subscribers in 42 countries including recent agreements with Vodafone, SingTel, American Movil, Swisscom, and Orange.
Let’s make sure those numbers didn’t pass you by…

If it wasn’t already clear, Apple’s official WWDC announcement establishes the iPhone as the next great mobile device platform. The release states-
This year’s WWDC will showcase two revolutionary development platforms, the ground-breaking innovations of OS X Leopard® and OS X iPhone™, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.
New at this year’s Conference will be a 2nd track devoted to the iPhone which will-
…enable mobile developers to work side by side with Apple engineers to create amazing applications that leverage iPhone’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface, animation technology, rich set of APIs, including programming interfaces for Core OS, Core Services, Media and Cocoa® Touch technologies, built-in three axis accelerometer and geographical location technology to deliver truly innovative mobile applications.
As WWDC get closer and closer (but NOT CLOSE ENOUGH) it is becoming clearer and clearer that, on one level, the last year might be considered a “trial run”. Why?
