Manual Exchange Syncing

image Ok so here’s just a quick thing I found out just now with a little bit of playing around. It might be obvious, but it certainly mystified me for a while. So there’s this little setting under Settings –> Fetch New Data –> Advanced where you can tell your Exchange account to only sync manually. This is fine for Mail with its refresh button, but what about Contacts and Calendar?

The key here seems to be just loading the programs up, which seems to start the sync process. The thing is, since you don’t initiate the thing, there’s no easy way to tell (AFAIK) when your sync is done. So beware of times when you’ve done a lot of work on your desktop calendar but haven’t opened Calendar on the iPhone. Maybe leave Calendar/Contacts on for a few minutes to make sure everything gets downloaded.

That’s all for now, folks. Hope that helps a few of you out there looking to save a bit of juice. I like Nuevasync for push PIM with Google, but I don’t need contacts and events updated live. My life’s just not that fast :D

How I WinPwned to 2.0.1

2.0.1[Disclaimer: still playing with Flock, can't preview posts while doing this, so pic location may be a little crazy]

Ok, so it was kind of a long road for me this time. It’s been a lot of shouting and cursing, but I figured I’d blog about it real quick so others might have it a bit easier.

Here’s how I went about upgrading the first time. I downloaded WinPwn 2.0.0.4, the 2.0.1 firmware, as well as the bootloaders (3.9 and 4.6). I followed the instructions at iClarified just like I did last time, put the iPhone in DFU mode, and utterly failed. Phailed. Flailed. The problem here was that iTunes refused to recognize the firmware I was making and would give me an error saying “iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6″. There are a lot of posts about this everywhere, but there were a few people here and there who claimed they were successful, so how’d they do it?

Intelliscreen is out on 2.0!

image Mmm, how I’ve missed my system tray alerts and e-mail previews on the unlock screen! That’s right, folks, Intelliscreen (review here) is back on the iPhone and works on 2.0. There are still a couple of bugs here and there (I have a heck of a time re-sizing the windows!) but it seems to be in pretty decent working order. Just add the source: http://intelliborn.com/cydia to Cydia and enjoy!

Btw, is it just me or is IntelliDial a bit faster now? Maybe it’s because my contacts aren’t set up with pictures yet..’

iPod/iPhone Firmware 2.0.1 out! Doesn’t work with Pwnage (yet)!

firmware 2.0.1 So the new firmware is out with a lot of bug fixes, 200+ MB of them. That’s the size of the file you’re going to have to download to update your iPhone – let’s hope they fixed some of the really iCrashing bugs to merit such a big patch. Just sync your iPhone up to see the update or, if you’re like me, sit on your laurels and wait for WinPwn to come up with a new version so you can patch.

Picture 144 When I wiped my iPhone and upgrade to 2.0 software while away from my desktop computer I realized I had no remote access to any of my contacts, tasks, or calendar appointments. They were just trapped on my home PC and awaiting the iTunes fairy to cast its magical sync spell. But now that I’m more grown up (or I guess my iPhone is more grown up – it’s already 2.0!) I didn’t really want to rely on the idea of magical wired synchronization and I started looking for a different solution.

iPhone 3G developing its own cracks!

image

Your hear far too often about hackers developing cracks for the iPhone, but it’s not everyday you hear about the iPhone developing its own cracks (cue laughter…please!). Engadget Mobile posted about some 3G owners developing cracks in their new 16GB iPhones that show up all the more because of that ivory white sheen. Black iPhones aren’t safe either, although the damage is a lot harder to see.

I read through a few of the comments, but saw the usual flame war start to prop up just a few posts down. I did like this line from commenter Jakob Henner, though: “I think the white iPhone 3G is an egg, this is just the beginning. In 2 weeks we will see a lot of Apple-designed dragons walking around.”

iPhone 2.0 not as rock-solid as before?

iphone 2

Dan has some less-than-stellar things to say about the iPhone 2.0 firmware. It’s true that the Apps store and the new features really make the iPhone shine like never before, but there’s certainly a price to pay for all of this new-found freedom. Dan’s once rock-solid iPhone is now experiencing a few crashes here and there and acting like a — dare I say it? — Windows Mobile device!

Here is the full article. I hope the patch comes soon, Dan!

iPod Touch 2.0 available now for $9.95

DSC_0836Headline says it all, folks. Also, if you were one of the brave ones to download an earlier version before the official release, you might want to re-download this version anyway. Apparently Gizmodo or Engadget (oh god, I forget which…so many iStories right now!) found some small differences in the firmware from today and yesterday. The claim is that the official firmware is faster. Food for thought.

Here’s the update link (via Gizmodo via MacRumors).

Rogers finally perforated by flak — lowers 3G data prices!

Oh, how sweet it is! I’m not sure this plan will apply to me, but it’s a ridiculous improvement over the data plans we’ve heard before. Rogers will offer for a limited time a 6GB data plan for $30 on top of any "in-market voice plan" for those who sign up for the three year contract. New and existing customers can choose a new voice plan, or keep their current plan and add the data packages onto them. This is a vast improvement over the lowet level plan of 400 MB data and 150 weekday minutes at $60/month.

image

6GB isn’t unlimited, but it’s a much better pricing level than 400 MB for $30/month (which is about what the data portion of the $60 package costs). Thanks to all who helped put pressure on Rogers at RuinediPhone.com.  I checked recently and the signatures were past 55,000! I’m not sure what it was that changed the pricing levels, but I’d love to think that 55k signatures helped somewhat :)

Stop the Madness: Petition against Rogers’ iPhone plan travesty

So Rogers recently released the data phone plans for the iPhone 3G in Canada, and boy oh boy, are they ridiculous. Let’s discount the prices, the three year contract (AT&T is two), the fact that there are fewer weekday minutes than AT&T plans, and let’s focus on the data portion of the plan. There are four levels of plans here, and none of them offer unlimited data. They start at 400 MB and end at 2 GB. You’ve got the internet in your pocket, but it’s on a leash. The 3G iPhone is about blazing a trail through the internet and not looking back. Counting your megabytes like you count your weekday minutes is not supposed to happen.

Anyway, if you’re even a quarter as outraged by this news as we are here at JAiB, give us a hand and sign this form at RuinediPhone.com. They’ve got 8898/10000 signatures (next goal is 25,000). Please sign up and help put a dent in Rogers evil plan to gouge all living creatures with a wireless signal.

More info at Crave.
