Today we’re taking a look at Brando’s iPower charger for the iPhone (well, 3G, really). It’s a relatively rare breed of chargers that actually fit on the devices they charge. I’ve taken a look at the Mophie charger over on JAMM but Brando offers a similar sled charging form factor for a just under half the price. The 2200 maH battery on this model sounds like it’ll give a fair amount more power and they’ve even thrown in a boosted speaker in the back for some added value. Hit the jump to see how this affordable charger/speaker set fares!
It seems like just a few days ago (because it was) that I sang the praises of 148apps.com for its feature that allows you to see recent price drops of applications.
Turns out that an even better site exists: AppShopper.com.

I was browsing TV shows on iTunes when I happened to look up Law & Order, one of my all-time favorite shows. In checking the description for an episode that I thought that I had watched, I was surprised to see the following:

Alright, so just picked up a new game a VERY short while ago and thought I’d give you a look at what its like. Its pretty obvious in the video - but I haven’t spent a lot of time yet with the game. I will say though the price at roughly $5 is decent. You’ll end up spending a lot of time with the game - but it’ll be in 5 minute spans…

In my admittedly sporadic testing over the past few days, I’ve not noticed much better battery life with the 2.1 update than before. Starting with a full battery, in a few hours of web/email usage under 3G I am down to 50% battery, and am easily able to get it to 20% with more usage throughout the day. I’m not impressed.
Adding insult to injury, two web applications that I wrote that feature the HTML "Meta Refresh" tag no longer work in Safari — but they did PRE-2.1.
<META HTTP-EQUIV=’Refresh’ CONTENT=’1 URL=/ ‘>
This tag should directed the browser to go to the page ("/" - the homepage, in this example) in the time specified (1, or 1 second in this example). This worked under 2.0 but does NOT under 2.1.
Anyone else seen anything noteworthy with their 2.1 upgrade?

Yes, that USB Power Adapter. The impossibly small one that we all shook our heads at and couldn’t believe. Well its got a recall. But not for something simple like the ability to catch on fire. Heck no - when you’re Apple and you’ve come up with an impossibly small adapter - you recall that adapter for the impossible: The little frickin prongs can BREAK OFF in the plug! Who Knew?!
Anyway, for now stop using the little guy and charge using your computer for a few days. According to Apple you can exchange it in stores on October 10th or you can order a replacement online.
Today Apple announced the Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter Exchange program.
Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.
The ultracompact USB power adapters were supplied with every iPhone 3G sold in the following countries, and may also have been purchased separately as an accessory:
US
Japan
Canada
Mexico
Several Latin American countries (click here for a detailed list of countries)
Note: Apple USB power adapters supplied with original iPhones or supplied with iPhone 3G units sold in other countries are not affected.

So maybe you don’t care, maybe you do - but I figure if I stopped to look then maybe you would be interested as well. Personally, as an owner of a first generation touch and an iPhone 3G I was quite interested to see just how much of a chunky monkey my iPhone really is!
Wondering just how thin the new second-gen iPod touch is when compared to the iPhone 3G? Well, whether you were or weren’t, we’ve got a quick gallery that we threw together where we put the two devices side-by-side.
So click on through to Gear Live and have a look at the whole Gallery
Well, I figure this had to happen sometime. Lord knows my wife absolutely despises the spell checker function, so if she doesn’t like it there’s bound to be a few more that don’t. Scratch that, my wife wanted to kill ME because of the spell checker, not because I did anything, but because it was my phone that was giving her such a hard time… come to this about it, I”m off to sign a petition - be back shortly.
“An internet petition has been building to protest Apple’s auto-correction feature on the iPhone, entitled Please Let Us Disable Auto Correction Steve. Many users would at least like the option to switch the feature off. The truncated words, commonly used while writing on mobile devices, are particularly problematic. Frühjahr Design has received nearly 3,000 ’signatures’ on its petition in the few days since its launch.
The body of the note, addressed to CEO Steve Jobs, suggests that the company should ‘let your developers make a simple switch button to turn autocorrection off…’ Signatures will be acce

So what’s Line Rider? Well, it’s a bit touch to explain but imagine drawing some lines and having a little guy on a sled riding whatever slope you can come up with…
Line Rider is out now on the AppStore and can be had for the low price of $2.99

After a day of testing the new 2.1 firmware, I can confirm that the following issues that affected my iPhone have been fixed:
Installation of applications from the iPhone’s App Store no longer takes 10-20 minutes. It now takes 30 seconds or so (depending on the size of the app). I now actually USE the App Store app!
Backups are much, much faster. The full backup that I ran just prior to the installation of 2.1 took over 2 hours. The full backup I just ran took just over 13 minutes, incremental backups are taking far less, on the order of 2-3 minutes per.
The Contacts and SMS applications are much faster and responsive.
What does NOT seem to be improved thus far is the battery life. With only one full day of testing, this is far from a conclusive statement, but I did manage to get down to the 20% warning in 6-8 hours, with one or two short calls and lots of surfing/app download/use. This is about what I would have expected pre-update.
After working with hundreds of other mobile devices, developing for the iPhone is a breath of fresh air. The hardware is stable and full-featured, while the software development tools are intuitive and represent a level of polish rarely seen in the mobile arena. — Jonathan Backer, The Walt Disney Company
