Quick Look: Panelfly, possibly the best comic reader on the iPhone

January 5, 2010

Panelfly is a free comic reader for the iPhone that is only available on the US iTunes store (as far as I know). It features an interface that’s sexier, more dynamic, and much easier on the eyes than the excellent Comics app (reviewed here). The basic reading experience is pretty similar to what we’ve seen [...]

My daughter and I are both fans of the Wallace and Gromit animated films, and we were excited to spot some new Wallace and Gromit comics in the App Store recently. There are four new Wallace and Gromit comic apps that have been released this month – and we recently had a look at [...]

Review: The Three Little Pigs for iPhone

August 20, 2009

The Three Little Pigs is an animated story app for the iPhone, which presents the classic fairy tale with illustration, an audio narration, and some pop-up type effects.
My 6 year old daughter (Zoe) and I have been trying this one out, and this is another of our joint reviews.

Review: Steampunk Tales for iPhone

July 31, 2009

Steampunk Tales is an iPhone reader app that is modeled on classic pulp fiction magazines.  Its App Store description promises that it will deliver ‘first-run, original fiction at an unbelievable price!’ in a ‘gorgeous customizable reader’.
Although I’d never come across the steampunk genre before being approached about this app, I was interested to [...]

Review: Eucalyptus for iPhone – ebook Reader for Free Public Domain Content

May 25, 2009

Eucalyptus has recently got lots of coverage round the web, due to its initial senseless and stupid rejection by Apple in their App Store reviews process, and the subsequent reversal of that decision which allowed the app to make its debut a few days ago.
Now it should start getting coverage for much better reasons [...]

Review: Tips & Tricks Guide (App) for iPhone Beginners

May 17, 2009

No matter how much of an iPhone power user (or expert) you are, it’s a good bet you also have relatives, friends, or work colleagues who are real beginners with the iPhone. I know I have a lot of people around me who have got onto the iPhone within the last few months.

I never mind helping people out with their questions as they’re getting to know the iPhone – in fact, it’s often good fun showing them a neat little trick that’s old hat to me, but is full of goodness for them. Direct help and guidance from a friend or family member is great, but not always available – so, as the saying goes, instead of giving your beginner friends a fish, it’d be nice to be able to teach them to fish (with the iPhone) as well. :)

I’ve been checking out an app that looks to fill just this sort of role – Tips & Tricks – The Ultimate Guide to iPhone Secrets – and I’m very impressed.

Review: The Story of the Three Little Pigs (Text Synchronized Audio Book) for iPhone

May 15, 2009

This is going to be quite a short review, because this app is hugely disappointing – to put it in a Three Little Pigs sort of context, it is a straw house for sure, no bricks at all …

Review: Star Trek Countdown

May 13, 2009

Star Trek Coundown is a 4-part series that serves as a prequel to the movie, filling in some of the backstory and adding more depth to some of the characters. The movie stands alone, obviously, but the comics paint a picture of the events occurring before the opening scene. I’m not really a fan of comics, but I figured it was worth $.99 to check out the first part and see how the app works and the storyline …

Review: The Little Red Hen (narrated storybook) on iPhone

March 2, 2009

This is a great iPhone app – a real winner if you have young kids who are getting into reading, or who are already fond of reading stories and having them read to them.
