Tonight the Dev Team has released the new Pwnage Tool 2.0 - which can jailbreak the iPhone 3G model and the iPhone 2.0 software.
The software does not yet provide an unlock capability, but it does offer its well-known easy interface for jailbreaking the iPhone V1, iPod Touch, or iPhone 3G.
I’ll be trying it out on my V1 iPhone running the 2.0 software very shortly.
There’s only a Mac version right now - hopefully a Windows version is in the works.
You can download the new Pwnage HERE - try the BigBoss mirror link towards the bottom of the page for faster download results …
5 days. Looks like that is all it took for the Dev Team to jailbreak the new iPhone 3G.
Their (very?) soon to be released new version of the Pwnage Tool app will now support the V1 iPhone, the iPod Touch, and the iPhone 3G - allowing you the classic ‘have your cake and eat it too’ sort of environment on the iPhone - as in, run the new 2.0 iPhone software and enjoy the App Store, and also run jailbreak apps that Apple won’t allow into the store, like video recording programs and apps that let you theme and customize the device.
The new Pwnage Tool has not been released yet, but it sounds like it is very close.
Check Out the Dev Team blog post HERE for more details and a video …
There’s some very positive sounding stuff around today on the progress and prospects of a 2.0 firmware jailbreak. ModMyiFone are reporting what for now are rumors on the Dev Team conquering 2.0, along with several screencaps like the one shown above - check out Installer an Cydia sitting right next to the App Store!
Also, earlier today Nate True - one of the leading and first iPhone hackers, former Dev Team member, and developer of Tap Tap Revolution - had this to say on Twitter:
iPhone 2.0 firmware is definitely already jailbroken. might be a couple days before they get it all tested, packaged, and released, though
All sounding very good if you’re in the ‘want my cake and to eat it too’ group who does not want to upgrade to 2.0 until there is a jailbreak. Although of course the next thing many will be wanting to see is their favorite jailbreak apps getting updated for the 2.0 firmware (Hey Dave!). Here’s hoping both efforts are moving along as quickly as it sounds like they are
Bored with the standard iPhone keyboard layout? Always fancied a it of that MacBook Air keyboard goodness?
If so, you may want to check out this latest mod for the iPhone keyboard - the MacBook Air Keyboard, from katak.
I tried to resist this one, but it just looked shiny and pretty and I had to give it a try. May be just my poor eyesight, but the keys on it look and feel smaller than the normal keyboard - but despite that I find myself liking it quite a bit so far.
The app warns you during its install that you should uninstall any other customized keyboards prior to installing it, or abort the install if that is not something you want to do.
I’ve uninstalled the app and reverted back to the normal keyboard without any issues - just to test - and have since gone back to the MBA style and it’s growing on me.
You can find the MacBook Air Keyboard on Installer now, via the Planet-iPhones source - which is part of Community Sources now, so you should not need to add any sources for this one …
In the last few days I’ve added a Kaleidoscope program to the iPhone (shown in the screencap above). It - well - makes kaleidoscope shapes as you move and tilt the iPhone. I’ve also installed a simple ‘talking’ clock app - that displays the time quite plainly in a digital clock style and speaks the time out when you tap the screen.
A third program I’ve looked at over recent days is called CatchPhrase, and it tracks - you guessed it - catchy phrases that you hear friends and others using.
Each of these apps does a perfectly good job at doing pretty simple things as far as I can see - nothing wrong with ‘em at all. But … I have to say I’m not mentioning them because any or all of them knocked my socks off …
iSpazio has released a big new Icon Pack for the Theme Builder app, containing some 750 icons to work with …
A few weeks back we told you about the Theme Builder application for iPhone - which lets you edit existing themes and build your own theme from scratch right on the iPhone itself. It’s a great program and is the perfect solution for when you have a theme you really like but just wish the icons were a little different, or icons you love on another theme, but you just want to swap the wallpaper.
Theme Builder lets you modify and create themes to satisfy all your personal tweaking desires. The only slightly disappointing thing about Theme Builder on its initial release was that there were only a small handful of wallpapers, docks, and icons provided to use when creating your new masterpieces.
iSpazio’s new Icon Pack for Theme Builder has now been released - with around 750 icons to play with when editing and creating themes. There are some very familiar / popular looking sets included in the pack - and a good number that I wouldn’t mind using at all.
It’s good to see a first icon pack for Theme Builder - and I hope we’ll start to see lots more add-on packs to help spur us all on in coming up with our perfect, custom themes.
You can find the iSpazio Icon Pack on Installer now …
Well, I succumbed to temptation tonight - and tried out Pwnage Tool. I had been fighting off this temptation for a little while now, but over the last couple of nights I’d read a little more on Pwnage and felt pretty comfortable giving it a go. A couple of my prior concerns were that it would not be easy to find custom firmwares to use with Pwnage, and that a lot of 3rd party apps might not be available.
Both these concerns were ill-founded and just due to not having researched things enough. Pwnage Tool builds your custom firmware for you, easily and quickly, as long as you’re happy on firmware 1.1.4. That’s fine with me, as the newer 1.2 / 2.0 offers little or no apps compatibility as yet anyway. And if you stay with a custom, pwned and jailbroken 1.1.4 you can slap all your 3rd party apps straight back on.
My experience so far with Pwnage Tool has been mostly good - a few glitches, but nothing major (touch wood). This also gave me a good opportunity to give TimeCapsule a good workout, and see how effective it really is at restoring things and potentially saving some time when doing a new jailbreak. If you’re interested in my very quick (and written while a little tired and jaded at 3:00am) blow-by-blow of how it went, read on …
The Windows version of the new Pwnage jailbreak tool has been launched in beta today. Winpwn comes with a few limitations and several wanrings in this first beta release. The first and most clear warning is:
WARNING THIS IS ONLY FOR BETA TESTERS AND COULD CAUSE YOU TO RESTORE YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH LOSING DATA
In this beta, 2.0+ support is disabled - as are most of the custom options and the unlock baseband features. The hope and expectation seems to be that after some further testing over the nxt few days, there will be a final release with most or all of these limitations lifted.
If you’ve been anxiously waiting on winpwn, you can go get it now. Go HERE for full instructions and details at the developer’s site ..
Just a day after the release of the new Pwnage tool from The iPhone Dev Team, another new tool has been announced, that will be used with Pwnage and make building custom firmwares for the iPhone an easy process with an elegant front-end GUI to work with.
IPSWTool is the next step of building custom firmwares with the style and grace of iLiberty+. With IPSWTool you can create custom firmwares packaged will all the goodies already downloaded and inserted into the IPSW. These custom firmwares can be restored onto iPhones and iTouchs that have already been Pwnd.
The new tool will let you easily add essential and popular iPhone applications via simple checkboxes - things like Installer, the BSD Subsystem, SSH, and an apps pack of BigBoss apps (one of our very favorite sources for great iPhone utilities). The screenshot above also shows another feature that would be superb - the ability to adjust the OS and Media partition sizes on the iPhone. This would mean you could make sure that as soon as your custom firmware is installed, you have plenty of room for applications, without having to move ringtones around or anything like that to create additional space.
As with any app, and perhaps especially with a voice command program, your mileage may vary a whole lot - but I honestly felt the last few days like I wanted to turn into the Verizon TV ads guy, and just ask Voice Dial ‘Can You NOT Hear Me Now???“ — Patrick's Voice Dial review
