A couple weeks back I posted on a few sites that you can use to measure your connection speeds on the iPhone. One of them was the well-know DSL Reports site, which at the time did not offer a very iPhone friendly page.
Well … now they do. They’ve got a nicely iPhone optimized page for all your EDGE, 3G, WiFi and even (God forbid) GPRS testing needs. This is good stuff, as DSL Reports has always been one of the best testing sites to use.
The Listropolis site has a compilation of 50 ’stunning’ iPhone wallpapers up that mostly live up to that term. They’ve pulled together a very good mix of some great nature and Apple-related and miscellaneous images for use as wallpapers.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that with the new 2.0 software you can now tap and hold on any of these images in Safari on the iPhone and choose to save the image directly down to the Camera Roll.
So, depending on how much browsing you feel like doing, check out the shorter compilation of 50, or go straight for the huge pool of images in the Flickr group - either way, lots of good stuff
Apple’s got a very good new iPhone help site up that provides:
iPhone Getting Started Guide and Help
Usage Tips and How-To’s
Troubleshooting tips
Although the site is geared mainly towards those who are new to the iPhone or at beginning level, there is a good overall mix of content - with some topic areas and individual articles that should also prove of interest even to veteran iPhone users.
If you’re planning to get yourself an iPhone 3G in just around five days, one of the first things you’ll probably be wanting to test out is just how fast your 3G speeds are. I know I’ll be keen to test this out early and often with the new iPhone.
There are bound to be tons of sites around for this testing, but here are a few I’ve noticed that look good:
http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html - iPhone section of the well-known Dslreports site - not very nicely done for the iPhone (requires a lot of pinching and zooming) but a well-established testing resource.
Flytunes - the popular satellite radio streaming site for the iPhone - is expanding its range of stations:
FlyTunes continues to expand its entertainment offerings, having announced a deal today with terrestrial radio corp Entercom, one of the biggest ‘regular’ (as opposed to satellite) radio corp in the U.S. Users of the free service will be able to listen to content from all Entercom-owned radio stations …
There are not a huge number of cities available as yet (18 if I counted right this morning) and only one or two stations per city so far - but hopefully this will expand with time, and potentially with agreements with other non-satellite radio networks.
Nice to see Flytunes continuing to improve their offering.
You can sign up for (it’s free) and check out Flytunes on your iPhone at:
Google has just announced that it will be providing Google Talk for the iPhone and iPod Touch. As Google Talk will be a web application, you won’t need to download it from the AppStore, and your iPhone does not have to be jailbroken to use it. To view the Mobile Safari-based Google Talk page, point your iPhone or iPod Touch to google.com/talk. You can also access it through any browser via this link: http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/m
As it is a WebApp and runs in Safari, GoogleTalk will switch your status to “Unavailable” when you are viewing another window in Safari or when you return to the home screen - it cannot run in the background. A description of the app from the Google Mobile team:
We’ve tried to keep the design as faithful to the desktop experience as possible, so it should be familiar to you. You can select from a quicklist of the people you contact most, search your contacts, and manage multiple conversations.
Friendfeed now has an iPhone optimized version of their site - just a few days after FFtogo came out with theirs - and I have to say I much prefer the new Friendfeed site.
It looks very sharp and feels great to work with so far. It features larger fonts and elements on the page than FFtogo which, for me anyway, makes it even more handy to find things quickly and interact with quickly.
I like the large links across the top of the page for the Friends / Rooms / Me and Best sections, and also like that you can toggle the iPhone or ‘normal’ version of the site.
I’ve only recently discovered the Revision 3 site for internet TV - but have been enjoying it whole lot and getting hooked on several of its featured shows. And I watch it almost exclusively on the mobile version of the site on the iPhone.
If you haven’t come across Revision 3 yet, it’s home to a cool collection of web TV shows - like The Digg Reel (best of Digg sort of compliations), the live Diggnation shows, Tekzilla for tech news, reviews and tips, The Totally Rad Show, and lots more.
If you’re a Friendfeed user, there’s a very nice new option out this week for working with it on the iPhone. The new FFtogo site provides an iPhone / mobile optimized version of Friendfeed - one that I’ve been enjoying using a lot so far.
Friendfeed’s own site is not bad at all on the iPhone, but FFtogo just offers a bigger-formatted, clean optimized UI for it that I prefer using so far. I just find links and things quicker to get to via this optimized site. The two screencaps above show the original Friendfeed site (on the left) and the FFtogo page on the right.
Evernote - a huge favorite application for myself, Brandon, Dan and just about all of us here - has now finished its extensive private beta period and is open for everyone to sign up for an use.
If you haven’t had a chance to try out Evernote yet, you absolutely need to. It is a superb, do-it-all notes and photos and all-around information capturing tool that is incredibly versatile and powerful. It also has an excellent iPhone web-based client, and I have a feeling probably a native app in the works somewhere.
After working with hundreds of other mobile devices, developing for the iPhone is a breath of fresh air. The hardware is stable and full-featured, while the software development tools are intuitive and represent a level of polish rarely seen in the mobile arena. — Jonathan Backer, The Walt Disney Company
