A couple of heavyweight tech / business sites are reporting that it’s likely the iPhone App Store could open by midday Eastern time today, to coincide with the first iPhone 3G models going on sale in New Zealand.
TechCrunch says iPhone developers have been informed their NDAs (non disclosure agreements) with Apple will be lifted ‘around 9 am PST’ this morning.
Forbes.com simply say that the store may open early "according to three people who have been briefed on the matter." - and offers the same possible opening time (though it’s listed as 12:00 Eastern).
The first thing to like about these rumors - we don’t have to wait long at all to see if they’re true. More importantly though, this would just be sweet. It’s only one day earlier than we’re expecting the iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store, but with all this waiting, I’ll take it! Can’t wait to see all the new apps …
I think I may have mentioned I am definitely finding the way-ayyyy-ting is the hardest part, leading up to the iPhone 3G and especially the 2.0 software and App Store launch. Luckily there is no shortage of juicy iPhone rumors of all sorts making their way round the web this week, to keep me at least a little distracted. Like …
Gizmodo has a report up today - citing sources in ‘Cupertino’s software development effort’ - saying that it is ‘tentative’ but ‘highly probable’ that a final version of iPhone 2.0 software will be ready this Friday, June 27th.
The 2.0 Golden Master copy would be an ‘internal’ sort of release to developers, but might also mean that the software is ready to go on iTunes when Apple wants to pull the trigger. If 2.0 does come out Friday or thereabouts, that would meet the original deadline announced at Apple’s SDK launch event, of a release in June, rather than the ‘early July’ window that Steve Jobs mentioned at the WWDC keynote event.
Friday’s date of 6/27 had been the subject of some feverish rumors right after Jobs’s speech as a possible 2.0 release date, due to an Apple Australia page that showed June 27th as an App Store opening date before being taken down.
Gizmodo also mentions that the Dev Team "has confirmed they are working hard cracking the latest build, getting ready for the pwnage of the final release." Good news for all who want to be able to grab the 2.0 update AND keep their jailbreaking options open.
All I can say as far as a possible June 27th (or 28th / 29th / anywhere close to that) is YES PLEASE. Bring it on, sooner rather than later. I am much more excited about the 2.0 update and the App Store than I am even about the iPhone 3G, and really would like to see the new software by around yesterday
The Boy Genius Report has got a report up on a tip they’ve received - saying that AT&T stores will be putting the iPhone 3G on sale at 8:00am on July 11th - not 6pm or late in the day, which had been the consensus pick so far for 3G launch day rumors.
I know, I know - there will be plenty more of this sort of rumor stuff over the course of the next couple of weeks leading up to the iPhone 3G going on sale on July 11th - but this is one rumor that sounds awful good compared to what we had been hearing.
And sure, 8:00am, 6pm, it’s all pretty small stuff in any sort of grand scheme of things - but it just makes no sense to me for Apple / AT&T stores to do nothing all day and only start selling at 6:00pm - especially since it seems clear lines and waiting times are going to be *substantially* longer with the (reported) mandatory in-store activation.
Even though many of us rave about the handheld computing power found in the iPhone, there are still times where we’d also like to use the iPhone to control one of our ‘real’ computers back at home or at an office location.
Citrix is a long-time leading company that’s been providing remote desktop connectivity solutions for Windows and other platforms for a number of years - and apparently they’re now working on an iPhone client.
In fact, ZDNet in Australia reports that they’ve even demo-ed the client working on an iPhone and connecting to a remote Windows machine at a recent company event.
There are a number of options around for connecting to remote systems from the iPhone - from several web-based ones to the native VNSea jailbeak app - but it would be very cool to see an offering from an established leader like Citrix in this area, although I wonder how affordable a Citrix client might end up being, as they are traditionally not an inexpensive option in corporate environments …
We’ve been hearing for ages that Rogers would have to be working hard on producing some less than ridiculous data rate plans for iPhone buyers in Canada - and over the last few days the rumors are coming thick and fast that things are heading that way.
Engadget Mobile has a report up today citing some of the latest, that really don’t sound too outrageous, especially given past history in this area:
Pricing seems to be set at $199 and $299 for the 8GB and 16GB handsets as new activations or for upgrades to a qualifying 2 or 3-year plan. Yes, you’ll also need to grab yourself a data and voice plan, and options include a $30 unlimited Consumer Data Plan — it’s about freakin’ time — or $45 Enterprise Data Plan. Both of these include Visual Voicemail when subscribed to a voicemail plan, though, only the Corp. plan seems to let you get at your Exchange server for push mail.
It’s been a long wait for Canada - for the iPhone and for some decent data rates - here’s hoping some of this pans out …
This week there are more reports of allegedly leaked photos of cases for the 3G iPhone - and once again they are said to indicate a larger, more rounded back for the 3G model, and possibly a front-facing camera.
The latest reports focus on cases from Griffin Technology, a leading iPhone and iPod accessory manufaturer:
Specifically, the photos are said to be of Griffin’s upcoming Flex GRIP iPhone 3G silicone case mold, which was built with help from 3G iPhone specifications provided to the company under non-disclosure agreements.
Check out Apple Insider’s post HERE for more details - and let us know what your latest guesses are on what the 3G model will look like / feature, while we all hurry up and wait for June 9th …
… word on the street is that the most recent version of the iPhone 2.0 beta has added a "Location Services" feature that encompasses what appears to be GPS-based Google Mapping, along with geotagging for the phone’s camera app.
Engadget Mobile is reporting that it looks like the upcoming (hurry up!) iPhone 2.0 software contains another slick little feature we’d not seen mentioned before today - geotagging.
Any developers out there care to confrim if they’ve noticed this in the latest beta build? This would be another good addition …
Son of iPhone is about to make its appearance on June 9. We expect that you will give this important news the column inches it deserves, just as you did last year.
Man do I love that opening salutation! Fake Steve Jobs at his best that is. In the unmistakable FSJ style, he has not only confirmed the June 9th announcement, but he’s provided the rundown on what to expect - and what is expected of journalists in these next few coming days. Some of the highlights:

The market for jailbreak apps is ONLY in countries where there is no App Store. Hackers and non-mainstream apps will move over to Android… — Craig Hockenberry, IconFactory (makers of Twitterific)
