According to Danielle Cassley, one of the game’s creators, there was no nefarious intent; having your contacts uploaded was easier than typing in friend data by hand. Casserly maintains that they "weren’t trying to be sneaky about how this worked" and that a notification message of some sort was "just overlooked".

Casserly notes that an updated version that uses HTTPS to encrypt the data has been submitted to the App Store and is currently "In Review" status. She notes that the data in question was never stored on their servers.

The question that remains unanswered: Why transfer the entire contact list at all when most of those contacts are likely not iPhone owners? Why not present a list of contacts and allow players to checkmark those whom they’d like to keep track of in the Aurora Feint Community?

Thus far, it appears that those who already have downloaded the game will not see it magically disappear from their iPhones - which begs yet another question - does Apple have any methodology for mass-removing from iPhones applications that prove to be legitimate security threats?

One of the nifty features of the 2.0 software is taking screenshots by pressing the Home and Lock buttons at the same time. There are lots of ways to make use of the feature: screenshots for an app review, capturing your home screen to show to your friends, or grabbing a page in Safari to look at later.

However, there’s one quite useful feature of it discovered by James1292 on the Apple Discussions board. It’s a way to crop photos on your iPhone, a feature that has been frequently asked for. It’s simple to do; just zoom in on the portion of the image you want to crop, and take a screenshot. There will then be a new image of the area you selected. Of course, this won’t result in the highest quality image, (quality will decrease as you zoom further) but it’s a start.

One of the many noticeable weak areas so far in the iPhone 2.0 software is a certain amount of lag / slowness in various places. For me, the Contacts application, and in particular the Search portion of it, is one area where this is definitely felt.

So I was very glad to come across a quick but super useful tip from everythingiCafe forum member i Robot - in this thread - which points out that the new (and free) Google Search app does a great job at searching contacts.

And it sure does. It feels considerably faster to me than the built-in app, and lets you tap to go directly to a selected contact just as you can in the built-in applet. A little embarassing for Apple that Google’s app can out-do theirs, but good for us to know about

When you Google “iPhone apps”, this website comes up as the top hit. When you view, the page, you see an offer that reminds you of MacHeist; a bundle of the “top 10 iPhone apps”, that all go for a price of $24.95, which the website calls “a steal”

However, there are quite a few interesting things about it, if you look deeper. First of all, you are required to jailbreak your iPhone to use these application, and the website does not state this on the home page or state that you cannot install the apps with the consent of Apple. Also, in order to jailbreak the iPhone, the website sells ZiPhone, a freeware jailbreaking app. Also, there are two interesting apps in the bundle; a screenshot app and a VNC app. Taking screenshots is supported in the 2.0 firmware, and there is a free VNC app in the AppStore. Hmmm.

The website also contains a lot of improper grammar, and the link to the “Live Chat” does not work. There have been customers of the website that have lost their money and not received the bundle. I advise you not to buy these applications and to avoid the website.

Now, in addition to the original ‘Lite’ - and free - version, there is also a Full, paid-for version. The Full version goes for $5.99.

Our good friend Dan over at What’s On iPhone has got a post up detailing what you get with the Full version, and some thoughts on whether it’s worthwhile.

For now, the Full version’s extras are pretty minimal it seems to me, but maybe these will be extended over time.

Check out Dan’s post HERE for the full comparison …

But under the hood, MobileSafari 2.0’s performance is hugely improved over 1.1.4. Everything related to web surfing feels faster, and in side-by-side comparisons using my wife’s iPhone running 1.1.4, web pages consistently load faster on 2.0, both via Wi-Fi and EDGE. This has nothing to do with the new iPhone 3G hardware — this is about dramatic performance improvements on original iPhones upgraded to the 2.0 OS …

The results are obvious. WebKit JavaScript performance has improved steadily and significantly in just one year, with a huge jump between 1.1.4 and the new 2.0.0.

John Gruber at the excellent Daring Fireball site has done some benchmark testing of the MobileSafari browser on the iPhone, comparing the performance under the latest 2.0 software to previous firmware - and seeing major speed improvements under 2.0.

John’s article also points out that this speed gain is not only felt in the Safari browser on the iPhone, but also in many other apps that make use of their own built-in WebKit browsers - like NetNewsWire, Twitterific, and many others.

My own feeling so far is in line with these tests - browsing and page loading does seem a fair bit faster under the new firmware. What do you all think? How are you finding the browsing experience / performance on 2.0?

Nate True - creator of Tap Tap Revenge and old-school iPhone hacking guru - has posted a set of detailed instructions for tethering with the iPhone 3G - so that you can make use of its 3G speeds as a modem for a laptop or similar.

The process requires a jailbroken iPhone 3G, involves a relatively lengthy set of steps on both the iPhone and a desktop browser, and is not for the faint of heart for sure. It is also absolutely against the terms of your AT&T contract and doing it could leave you exposed to data overage charges!

If you’re cool with all of the above warnings and keen to give tethering a crack, check out Nate’s step-by-step guide HERE …

A couple weeks back I posted on a few sites that you can use to measure your connection speeds on the iPhone. One of them was the well-know DSL Reports site, which at the time did not offer a very iPhone friendly page.

Well … now they do. They’ve got a nicely iPhone optimized page for all your EDGE, 3G, WiFi and even (God forbid) GPRS testing needs. This is good stuff, as DSL Reports has always been one of the best testing sites to use.

Munster says that Apple didn’t correctly predict the initial demand for the product and has been left without stock to sell. He believes four weeks is the lead time Apple needs to ramp up orders and get new units delivered to its stores.

According to multiple reports - including this one - round the web over the weekend, the iPhone 3G is sold out just about everywhere in the US now - and it may now take up to four weeks for Apple to get their stores re-supplied.

Ouch. Not good for anyone who was hoping to wait for the lines to die down and grab one in a more civilized manner.

Any of you still looking round for a 3G? Or waiting on re-supply for local stores?

Alright - since right now we have to pay out of pocket for everything we review around here from the App Store (Apple fix this please) … sorry if you don’t see a lot of reviews coming out of the "pay-for" section. Unfortunately money isn’t growing on trees around my house, but if I end up buying something off of the App Store - you’re going to know - and you’re going to get 100% is it worth it knowledge.

So, lets get started looking at a nifty little word search game for the iPhone called Wordfind by On-Core. Now before we go any further … if you’re considering Wordfind you should also consider dropping an extra $3 and getting the On-Core Game Pack Vol. 1 which also includes Sudoku and a picture puzzle game. But for $1.99 …

You really can’t go wrong on this one. Let’s take a look:

Wordfind is a word search puzzle game that comes with an unlimited number of puzzles and three different difficulty levels. Obviously if you’ve looked up … Easy, Medium and Hard are the levels.

You’ll notice I said unlimited number of puzzles. According to the App Store page, the games are generated randomly - so theoretically you’re never going to play the same game twice. You’re also going to wonder if some of these words are actually words …

but so far all the ones I’ve looked up seem to be legit so I wouldn’t plan on seeing a who lot of simple to find and remember words.

Every game is timed - not timed as in you run out of time - but timed against your previous best for each particular level. Basically you end up racing yourself which adds an interesting dynamic.

So here’s the thing. I’ve been looking for a really good word search game since Mastersoft included it in Brain School a while back, and I’m happy to say that for $1.99 (as I said before) you can’t go wrong with this one. Sure hard could definitely be a bit harder, and easy is well - pretty easy … but its a quick time waster type of game and one I’m going to definitely recommend. I know I’ve gotten my $1.99 worth!

A lot of folks had been hoping for support for the A2DP Bluetooth audio stack in the 3G iPhone. (A2DP allows for stereo music over Bluetooth in addition to the standard mono Bluetooth headset audio.) Unfortunately, Apple did not gratify this particular wish, but now Hong Kong-based accessory maker Brando is stepping to the gap with the INFINXX AP23.

Good news for those who’ve been longing for A2DP support on the iPhone, as long as you’re OK with an adapter. Even if you’re not a big fan of the adapter concept, this one seems very compact and pretty subtle in its appearance.

The INFINXX AP23 goes for $62 plus shipping, and you can check out all its details and specs HERE …

Just spotted this one via a post over at Gear Diary, and watched a video demo of this new iPhone ringtone making application called iRinger.

iRinger looks like a very good free option for ringtone creation - offering a very easy to use interface and a good, complete set of features - even down to letting you choose to export a newly created ringtone direct to iTunes or using SSH to directly transfer it to the iPhone.

This one is a Windows only application for now, so I’ve not given it a try as yet (too lazy just now to get iTunes setup on Fusion) - but it looks awfully good in the demo. Here’s some of the highlights of its feature list:

Three Steps: Import, Preview then Export. Done.

Convert virtually any audio format into an iPhone ringtone

Extracts audio out of video

Choose which section of the audio you want to hear

Adjust ringtone length, volume, fade in, fade out and loop gap

Export to iPhone ringtone format and import right into iTunes

Export to iPhone using SCP/SFTP and skip using iTunes

Use audio effects: Delay, Flanger, Boost, Reverse, etc.

For more on iRinger, see its home page, or check out the demo video HERE …

Tonight I’ve used the brand new Pwnage Tool 2.0 and pwned my V1 iPhone with a custom build of the iPhone 2.0 software - hence the App Store and Cydia sitting happily next to each other in the above screenshot.

So I thought I’d share a few quick impressions of the new version of the popular Pwnage Tool, and some sceencaps of what you’ll see as you run through the latest pwning process …

The initial release of Pwnage Tool 2.0 is Mac only - so if you’re on Windows, sorry, hopefully a version for you is in the works.

This is not intended to be a guide to using the new Pwnage Tool - if you’re looking for that, I suggest this one - but just a quick run-through to give a feeling for how the new tool looks, and my thoughts on using it …

Before you get started with Pwnage Tool, you should try to make sure you’ve got the latest iPhone firmware restore file available on your Mac - it should be a file with a name like: iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (for a V1 iPhone - for a 3G, the beginning of the filename would be iPhone1,2_ - and should be found under the path YourUsername/Library/ iTunes/iPhone Software Updates.

When you fire up Pwnage Tool 2.0, it first prompts you to choose which iPhone / Touch you’ll be working with:

I was doing my V1 phone.

You can choose Simple or Expert mode during the Pwnage process - the main difference being that Expert mode lets you make more manual choices, while Simple uses default sort of choices.

Once you choose your phone version, Pwnage looks for the firmware restore file, shows you it when it finds it, and lets you select it to continue on with the next steps in the process (indicating where the bootloader files are etc.)

When you choose to build your custom restore file (which will be a jailbroken version of the 2.0 firmware you selected), you can accept the default name for this custom firmware file or give it a unique name of your own choosing, and choose where to save it to (make sure you’re clear on where it’s being saved to, so you are able to point iTunes at it in the final restore step).

When the custom firmware is finished building, Pwnage asks if you have yet pwned the phone:

Once you click No at this stage, Pwnage does its final piece, pwning the phone. When it’s complete, it reports success, tells you to close out of Pwnage Tool, and run a normal restore via iTunes, clicking Option > Restore, and choosing your newly created custom firmware tool to restore with.

I was very impressed with Pwnage Tool whenever I used it with the 1.1.4 firmware - and this latest 2.0 version of the tool is even more impressive. It has bigger, bolder instructions and hints, offers a lot of help and guidance on getting the iPhone into DFU (recovery) mode that is required for the pwning process, and works quickly and well overall.

Once the jailbreak / pwning is done, for now there is not a lot of excitement if you’re longing for your old 1.1.4 sort of jailbreak environment - because there is no Installer app yet, just Cydia, and so far none of the popular 1.1.4 jailbreak apps seem to have made it over to the 2.0 scene yet.

Now we’ll have to wait to see how jailbreak developers do on porting their 1.1.4 apps across for 2.0 …

Tonight the Dev Team has released the new Pwnage Tool 2.0 - which can jailbreak the iPhone 3G model and the iPhone 2.0 software.

The software does not yet provide an unlock capability, but it does offer its well-known easy interface for jailbreaking the iPhone V1, iPod Touch, or iPhone 3G.

I’ll be trying it out on my V1 iPhone running the 2.0 software very shortly.

There’s only a Mac version right now - hopefully a Windows version is in the works.

You can download the new Pwnage HERE - try the BigBoss mirror link towards the bottom of the page for faster download results …

Hurrah! After a week of being held firmly in some bizarre sort of Apple limbo-land without much clue as to what obscure bit of paperwork was causing a holdup, Ilium’s eWallet application has finally made it to the iPhone App Store.

The app has been ready to go since before the App Store launched, so this last week has been intensely frustrating to eWallet users, fans, and of course to Ilium, who make this leading password manager program.

Thankfully, that’s all done with now - and eWallet is now available. For those who are unfamiliar with the application, it has long been a leader in the digital wallet / password manager category on Palm and Windows Mobile, and winner of awards many times over for best in class in its category. It’s been my personal favorite password keeper app for many years, and I’m very happy to see it on the iPhone.

The iPhone app looks and works wonderfully well in my usage so far. An old favorite looking better than ever on a new platform

eWallet is available now at $9.99 in the Productivity category of the App Store.

If you haven’t ever seen it, check the video clip HERE, or even the full Wikipedia entry for the whole scoop.

And now there’s a native app that brings the power of this skit to our iPhones. Cowbell presents you with this awesome instrument and lets you provide more cowbell while a track plays in the iPod app - and even occasionally harasses you when it feels the need for more cowbell!

Simple, useless, big fun …

One week into the joys of iPhone 3G ownership, there are a few issues some of us (or many of us even) are still getting to grips with - and getting battery life where we’d like it to be is certainly on that short list.

So it’s good to see a couple of posts today with short rundowns of some extended battery options for the iPhone 3G, to help it give it a boost. Geek.com has an article on this, with a couple of choices (though one is clearly not designed for the 3G and took some forcing to make work), and Gizmodo also has a good little list with a few handy battery helpers.

Most of the battery backs featured are relatively compact and bolt right on to the iPhone’s dock / charger connector. I’ve been testing (and will soon review) one of them, the Kensington Mini, with the V1 iPhone, and liking it a fair bit.

If you’re not getting the results you want with battery life so far, you may want to peruse a few of those choices and see if they’ll work for you.

In the meantime, I’m also finding my battery life is improving with some tight management of when certain services are on. More than anything, I’ve noticed a *huge* improvement once I scrapped Push and Fetch for email (and all the rest). I turned it off completely a couple of nights back and have seen a much, much better performance hit than I got with any other efforts so far.

I realize that for many folks push may be a necessity or a dealbreaker - but I’m not trading stocks or doing anything that is so time-sensitive that I really require this. I’ll take the much better battery life and check mail when I need to.

Have you got a good strategy for maximizing your iPhone 3G battery life worked out? Will you be looking at any accessory options in this area?

I NEED A WAL-MART

During the trip, we stopped for one of those gas/restroom/diaper change/beverage stops that any parent who has ever undertaken a road trip knows all too well. While we were there, my wife realized that we needed a few more disposable sippy cups - and the only store that we knew that carried them was Wal-Mart. We were already quite a ways from home and did not know the area - so we turned to the GPS system first. However, there was one major problem - the GPS showed us all the Wal-Marts in the area - but didn’t tell us which were along our route. So, to the iPhone I went. First, I used the Location feature (the circle-hash icon in the lower left of the screen) to figure out where we were. Then I did a search for Wal-Mart. Immediately, Google Maps showed on the map all of the local Wal-Marts, and since they were plotted on the map around our location, it was easy to pick one that was on the way and not too far off the Interstate. Clicking the arrow on the tagged location, I was given the street address, the phone number (which I tapped to call them to ensure that they were a 24 hour location) and an option to route either to or from their location. I chose "Route to this location" and was provided the route to take.

WHERE 3G TRUMPS 2G

Now, on the 2G iPhone, this would be nice, but since the 2G iPhone has no capability to constantly follow your progress along the route, it’s not terribly useful unless you are familiar with the area. Where the 3G iPhone shines is in its GPS receiver that allows the iPhone to track you as you drive, scrolling the map while you remain centered on it. This makes it very easy to determine how close you are to the next turn.

Now, of course, you do have to click the forward arrow at each step along your route, and you get no warning unless you are paying attention - but this is still quite usable, especially in a pinch.

WHERE ARE WE?

My GPS unit is great for guiding us from one place to another, but unless you want to keep zooming in and out, (which is not terribly convenient on this unit) it’s not easy to get an idea where you are in between, say, Jacksonville, FL and Savannah, GA. Here, the iPhone is great as well. Hitting the Location button finds and tracks you in the center of the scrolling map, which you can zoom out for an overview of where you are in the trip. You can also do this with the 2G iPhone, <strike>but of course your progress will not be automatically tracked.</strike>

Note: Reader Ghostshirt comments that the 2.0 update apparently now DOES automatically update your position; a change from the 1.x firmware:

"actually, the 2g version updates your location also. There is not a blue dot, but the old blue circle moves. I just made a trip from Illinois to Maryland and used my original with the 2.0 firmware. It gave a pretty good location most of the time and certainly kept updating itself. We wanted to find a white castle, and it led us there easily."

TRAFFICKING IN INFORMATION

My GPS unit included a free 30 day trial to a live traffic service, which gets traffic information from an FM radio subcarrier channel. Google Maps, of course, can show traffic as well. As we drove along I-95, suddenly I saw red on the Google Maps display ahead of us. I quickly checked the GPS unit to see what it had to say about the traffic - and it did not list any problems. So, which one was right? As it turned out, we hit bumper-to-bumper traffic precisely where Google Maps said we would. Needless to say, I won’t be paying for the GPS unit’s traffic service.

MUCH MALIGNED

Despite the usefulness of Google Maps for things at which a GPS is not terribly efficient at (such as quickly determining how far out of your way a detour to an attraction would take you, or showing a satellite view of a park to determine where the ballfield is, or, let’s not forget, traffic conditions), many people have taken issue with the fact that Apple did not include a full navigation package with the iPhone. We now know that Telenav is planning such a service and TomTom is rumored to be working on one as well. But hold on! Give the Google Maps/GPS combination in the 3G iPhone a chance; you may very well decide that it’s all you need - or is a great adjunct to a GPS unit.

To get weather for your current location, you can either enter your zip code or have WeatherBug use the GPS or Triangulation features to locate you.

Once you have set the location, WeatherBug displays lots of information, including the current temperature, wind >speed, weather alerts, and High and Low temperatures for three days (these can be tapped for even more information). There is also a tab at the bottom of the screen that shows radar for your area, using Google Maps as the background. You can also browse through pictures that were taken in or near your selected area.

There are a few improvements to the app that could be made with future updates, such as displaying information for more days than three. Also, the photo browser could include more photos, as well as ones that were taken closer to your location; some of the ones that I was shown in were in Virginia and Ohio, and I live in West Virginia. However, the app has not crashed once or rebooted my iPhone, so stability gets a good rating. All in all, WeatherBug is a very nice, useful little app.

Facebook’s iPhone application got a pretty major update tonight, adding a number of big wish list items - including writing on friends’ walls and viewing photo albums:

This updates brings the features you’ve been asking for: you can now write on your friends’ walls, view their photo albums, and see their full profiles. Photo browsing is more fun now with the addition of photo tags - just hold your finger down on a photo to make them appear. Photo uploading is also much faster, and you can finally upload pictures from your library that you’ve previously taken. Dozens of bug fixes have also been fixed, improving stability greatly.

This app is very slick all the way around now. I have to admit I have been only very occasional Facebook user for several months now, but this iPhone app is so nice to use I can seriously see myself updating and checking in on it more regularly now.

This update is out now. If you haven’t yet tried the native Facebook app, it’s definitely worthwhile - it’s free and can be found under the Social Networking category.

I’ve been waiting for this one. Twinkle - a very popular Twitter client in the jailbreak arena - has made it across to the iPhone App Store and is available now.

It’s a free app and it’s looking a good as ever. I’ve always found Twinkle’s interface the friendliest, most fun to use - and the new version still has me feeling very much that way. It’s only been out a short while and I’ve seen some others saying they’re seeing issues with it, but so far it is running smoothly for me.

One of Twinkles’s unique features since it first came out is its ‘Nearby’ tab, where it shows you all the tweets from all users who are within X miles of you (you set your preference anywhere from 1 mile to 1,000 miles or everywhere). This works well and is a fun way to discover Twitter users that are ‘local’ to you.

If you’re a Twitter user, give Twinkle a look when you get a chance - you’ll find it under the Social Networking category. Let us know what you think of it, and what your favorite iPhone Twitter app is …

And Advice given/needed.

Now - I know I’m not the only one who’s seen these screens lately. And I’d be willing to bet even more of you have see the screen that tells you that you can’t charge your iPhone 3G …

Now here’s the really crappy part: I’m getting these even with accessories like the USBFever.com iPhone FM Modulator that I’ve been using for a while now with my first gen iPhone. So What the heck are we supposed to do? APPLE? HELLO? I mean I know you had good reason to disable the FireWire charging pin like you did, but this is a bit ridiculous. Many of the non-charging accessories are just as screwed as the charging ones. And given the current state of crap-tastic the 3G iPhone battery is … accessories are about the only thing that keeps my iPhone running.

So far I’ve tried a couple different accessories from Belkin and others only to find that most are dead in the water. And no offense Apple store employees … but I KNOW that most of the accessories don’t work and WHY they don’t work. How is it that YOU don’t? No joke, I called the Flatirons Apple store on Tuesday and spoke to a nice girl there that cheerfully told me that if it didn’t work with the 3G they wouldn’t be selling it. Got to the store only to find out from a Mac Genius that she was wrong and the only way to know (since they aren’t labeled) is to try. 1 hour wasted. Thanks.

So … I figured I just throw this out there …

Anyone know of a good FM Modulator that charges the iPhone 3G and doesn’t sound horrible? Right now I’m living with the warning that the USBFever.com FM Mod doesn’t work (because it does work) but it sounds terrible.

And finally just in case anyone is shopping for 3G power - I’ve found that the Griffin Power Duo sold at the Apple store works like a charm and is especially handy since it lets you charge in the car and provides a plug for you to use at work too. Now I’m never far from power … still stuck in accessory hell though.
