Apple had their quarterly earnings call earlier today (you can listen to it in full here). VentureBeat has a good report up covering many of the most interesting topics discussed on the call, including:

Loadsamoney – Their CFO said they now have over $28 billion in cash, after strong sales last quarter.

iPhone Nano? – possibly a big hint on their stance on this:

No one specifically asked about the “iPhone nano,” the name members of the media are giving to a smaller, potentially cheaper version of the iPhone that’s been rumored for some time now, but Cook indirectly responded to it when asked about iPhone competitors. He noted that developing software on devices with multiple screen sizes and resolutions was hard on developers, so Apple clearly wants to avoid that …

Palm / The Pre – and the possibility that some of its goodness may not be entirely original:

Cook said it was difficult to judge products that are not yet on the market but that he welcomes competition as long as “they don’t rip off our IP [Intellectual Property].” An interesting statement given that the Palm Pre is the first major phone to use a multi-touch display since the iPhone.

The VentureBeat post has more details on what was said about iPhone price points, netbooks, and lots more good stuff. Check it out HERE

IP? It’s okay to copy multi-touch capabilities from Microsoft Surface but when someone else copies it they claim it’s theirs? From a patent stand point this might be all true but time and time it makes me question their business practices. I do hope that Palm does well, it might just make Apple take note and start improving the iPhone instead of preventing innovation.

CraigK – I guess this is all exacerbated in this case because Rubenstein and a lot of other ex-iPhone teamers from Apple defected to Palm and are working on the Pre.

I agree though that hopefully a bit of serious competition – on the design and ideas front at least – will hopefully push Apple to do more. I’d love to see their efforts focused that way …
