As I’ve mentioned around a zillion times, and will likely mention a zillion more, my daughter is 6 years old.  Up until now, she’s never wanted to go to a movie in an actual movie theater – has always been dead set against it in fact, very scared of the idea.

Last night, she shocked my wife and I by saying she would really like to go see ‘Up’ – the new Pixar animation film.  We talked it over with her for a fair bit last night and checked again this morning to make sure she was really ‘up for it’ (yikes – horrendous pun) and grabbed ‘an app for that’ and booked tickets.

Quick recap of the First Ever Movie experience:

  • Dimming of the lights was daunting beforehand, but no big deal when it happened
  • Massive screen and booming sound were a bit much for her at the outset, but just gripping after a bit
  • Several big-time scary and sad moments for her
  • Also lots of funny, great moments
  • Emotional rollercoaster for the last 1/3 of the film

She made it through though, despite a couple of ‘I want to go home’ moments.  And she thought it was fun, worth it and, most importantly, that she’d like to do it again.  That was the happy ending we were after. :)

Great choice, Patrick. I took Ben to see it in 3D the other day, and he loved it. Personally, I thought it was good, but not as good as some of the other Pixar movies. But the 3D was insane!

Hi Doug – yeah, I agree it is not my favorite out of the Pixar ones I've seen (not all of them, but a good few). 3D would've guaranteed us therapy bills for years. :)

Fun. I'm glad you had fun. Now if you want to keep going to movies, you better wait a while before you take her to one of the real IMAX movies. Super talk round encompassing screen, thundering sound, and dizzying almost nauseating footage…. My 9 year old still doesn't like IMAX. Regular movies, yes. But not IMAX.

Glad it all turned out good.

Rodney – Thanks, we're very happy it turned out well too. IMAX = yikes, yeah it may be a while before she works her way up to that :)

Jared – cool, we all enjoyed it as well …

I haven't seen this movie yet but I thought this was interesting:
