I spent a while trying to do that, too, but I hated the camera all the more for it. Some enemies came at me from the edge of the screen and so I'd go to attack them, but as I reached the extremes the whole screen would pan and I found it pointlessly difficult trying to precisely swipe on enemies when the camera was moving past me. Anyway, it's certainly not impossible as you've pointed out -- and I have read a few other reviews online that seem to have gotten through the game just fine.

A good comparison game is probably Mad Finger Games' Samurai: Way of the Warrior, which I also reviewed. That game threw a lot of swordsmen at you without providing heals, but after coming back to it a few times I got the hang of the timing and it felt more fair. It was really challenging, but there was a control scheme that at least let you feel like you had a fair chance of fighting back -- and I don't feel that's the case in this game.
