The difference is a small one or a big one depending on your point of view. It basically takes far fewer taps to have a number and new contact saved with Digits. The Phone app involves: enter number, tap the icon for adding a number to new / existing contact, choose new contact, edit first/last name, click save on that, click save again - at a minimum. Digits involves: enter number, slide to continue, add first / last name, tape Done.

It's quicker.

what's the difference between this and just go to your regular phone key pad and punch in the number and click on the add new contact sign? Doesn't that kinda of do the same thing? Why do we need a separate app for this? sometimes its takes me longer to find an app than just opening my regular phone app.

[...] Digits makes it super fast and easy to get someone’s phone number and have it added to the built-in Contacts / Address Book. I reviewed it recently, and liked it a whole lot – you can see that review HERE. [...]
