MeetTheFamily

It looks like GeoHot (also known as George Hotz) is at it again … This time around, in his recent blog post titled “Meet the Family”, he talks about the upcoming release of a jailbreak tool that will work for ALL iPhone and iPod Touches on 3.1 firmware. Here’s what he had to say:

no affiliation to greenpois0n. and it’s in some ways the complete opposite of purplera1n. but still 10 seconds. and may work for every version of software *ever*, based on the prettiness of the exploit

GeoHot is one of the original iPhone hackers and unlockers, and the creator of the recent purplera1n jailbreak method for firmware 3.0 (but not 3.0.1 or after).  If the above is accurate and he does release a tool that can jailbreak the 3.1 firmware on any iPhone / Touch model, I will be one of the many who will be damn near ecstatic to see it.

I’ve mentioned before that I have been kicking myself (harder and harder) for updating to firmware 3.1 and sacrificing my ability to jailbreak.

I was briefly hopeful last Friday when the Dev Team brought out a new version of their Pwnage Tool app – but after quite a bit of confusion and conflicting opinions on whether this could jailbreak a 3GS already on 3.1, I realized that the new tools would not work for me because I was already on 3.1 and had not managed to store any of the required files from my iPhone to Saurik’s server when it was jailbroken on the 3.0.1 firmware.

There has also been news over the last couple of days of an upcoming Windows adaptation of Pwnage Tool (not from the Dev Team), called sn0wbreeze – that is supposed to be released next week.

It’s looking like it’s going to be a very interesting couple of weeks for iPhone jailbreakers – or at least those who are running 3.1 on a 3GS and wanting to get back into jailbreak territory.  I know I am very keen to see what GeoHot brings out, and presumably some new tools from the Dev Team as well following on from that.

How about you?  Did any of you make use of the new Pwnage Tool version released last Friday?  Or are you still waiting on a new solution as well?

*** UPDATE: Looks like things are not going swimmingly now, to put it mildly.  This is an excerpt from the latest posting at GeoHot’s blog:

Sorry program has been cancelled due to chronic posting the exploit it uses. Now Apple will fix it double time, and I’m not about to race Apple. You will all have to wait for greenpois0n from them. I hope it doesn’t come after 3.2 is released.

Here’s hoping he and the other group speak further and work something out.

*** UPDATE 2: A quick change of heart.  This from GeoHot’s Twitter stream:

Being in the same boat as you, Patrick, I've been patiently waiting for George to do his thing. I had no doubt he would come through. Very exciting stuff! 2 days away, according to his Tweets…

Yeah – I saw the 2 days tweet as well. Very exciting indeed. :)

I can't wait for the jailbreak stuck on 3.1 on my 3GS. Never used purplera1n but have a lot of respect for GeoHot and what he does. I know that whatever he releases will be amazing. Just hope that it comes soon.

Sounds like it will be quite soon. He has mentioned 2 days on Twitter. Even if he doesn't quite make that, sounds like it won't be long.

you know my 3.0.1 jailbreak has been pretty stable.
and since i patched it to work with mms already, is there even a point to upgrade to 3.1?

6 Jeremy October 6, 2009 at 11:03 am

I haven't found a reason to upgrade and I'm still jailbroken on 3.0. I figure upgrading results in unnecessary work, the possible loss of some cydia apps, and the possibility of horrible battery performance. Until an update actually changes something important why bother?

Laurent & Jeremy – I think in the end there are usually a couple reasons to stay current on firmware version. One is that some apps may require latest version, as we're already seeing with 3.1. Another is that it often cuts down the number of steps, and complexity, of a future jailbreak and restore process – although that has not proved so true in the case of the 3GS and 3.1 so far of course :)

I personally have still been waiting for a new solution. I have not been to excited about restoring to a custom firmware. There are already 2 apps that I cant update and would like to because they require 3.1. I may go with geohot's solution or I may wait to see if dev team releases Redsnow for windows. Still up in the air about it. Thanks for keeping us up to date on everything. Im checking back everyday :)

Hi Erik – always great to hear someone is checking in daily :) We'll do our best to cover how this goes this week.

Patrick,
Your correct, some new/update apps require 3.1, but im still holding out on upgrading (w/ pwnage tool) my jailbreaked 3GS, because of the low battery perfomance issue of 3.1. However my wife has 3gs (OTB) with 3.1 and she has not complained about it at all. I can't make up my mind. Any advice?

I'm on 3.1 (boo, hiss) and I've not had any battery performance issues – but I know others have, so not sure what to tell you. I guess whenever you feel comfortable that there are JB options for 3.1 looking good, maybe chuck 3.1 on it then. That way if you have battery issues, you deal with those with Apple before re-jailbreaking.

I don't understand how when you HAVE a jailbroken system 3.0/3.01, you blindly go and update to 3.1 As a seasoned vet, I knew better than to fly leap into 3.1 when it came out and my patience was rewarded last Friday.

I am very pleased with 3.1 specially since I know I can run the latest apps requiring it. Plus having all of what Cydia offiers Hmmm life is good.

13 patrickj October 6, 2009 at 8:02 pm

I didn't go 'blindly' into the 3.1 update at all. I had previously saved the iBEC and iBSS files that were said at the time to help 'safeguard' future jailbreaks under 3.1 (though that seems not to have panned out so far). I did not save files to Saurik's server because I'd not even heard of that method when 3.1 came out. I knew exactly what I was doing when I updated to 3.1 and at the time I wanted to see the new iTunes based home screen / apps arranging badly enough to sacrifice jailbreak at least for a time. I said at the time that I had faith that a jailbreak would come along fairly soon for 3.1. Less than a month has passed, and there are two possible jailbreaks for 3.1 on the (near) horizon.

I've been switching my iPhone back and forth between stock and jailbroken since back in 1.x days – so I'm pretty happy about not feeling blind when making a switch.

I had an incredible stroke of luck today. I got my iPhone exchanged for poor battery performance and got one on 3.0! Reprieve!! I'm jailbreaking now and getting my ECID on file just in case. :)

You lucky, lucky barsteward! Damn :)

16 Oscar Salas October 10, 2009 at 5:43 pm

its funny because as soon as 3.1 was out, my jailbroken 3g on 3.0.1 got bricked. -_- and when i tried and tried, the only option was to upgrade. i think it was apples idea, to lock the baseband. come on dev team!!!

17 patrickj October 10, 2009 at 9:24 pm

I think you may have a while to wait for a Dev Team solution for 3.1 and 3GS (if you did not save your files to Saurik's server) – looks like GeoHot and Chronic team will have something first.
