Stanza

It was announced yesterday that Amazon has bought Lexcycle, who make the Stanza ebook reader app for the iPhone.

Apple Insider reckons the purchase was made ‘in a bid to extend its reach of the digital book market beyon its Kindle device’.

Lexcycle says the deal shouldn’t affect users of Stanza:

"We are not planning any changes in the Stanza application or user experience as a result of the acquisition," the company said in a blog post. "Customers will still be able to browse, buy, and read ebooks from our many content partners."

Stanza is one of the highest rated and most popular ebook readers for the iPhone, and delivers a range of great free content that I haven’t seen matched by any other iPhone app.

I know many Stanza fans are worried that the app may now just be swallowed into Amazon’s Kindle app.  I wouldn’t mind that too much as long as whatever new / merged app emerges has some or all of Stanza’s best features (that Kindle currently does not) and as long as access to other ebook formats and free content is not lost along the way.

What about you all – what would you like to see happen to the Kindle and Stanza apps following this acquisition?

Leave Stanza alone. I do not want to see another bully taking out the little guy.
