I know, I know – it is absolutely not very new news to tell you that the iPhone made it onto yet another ‘Best Something of The Year’ list – it’s on or at the top of just about all of those this year (and rightly so).  I think tapps2he only award it hasn’t got yet is a Nobel Peace Prize, and it’s probably nominated!

Anyway, the reason I think its presence on Wired’s ‘Top 10 Gadgets of The Year’, is notable is that they specifically list it as a jailbroken iPhone.  In fact, here’s just a taster of their views on the subject:

Out of the box, Apple’s iPhone is horrifically crippled.

I wouldn’t go that far, but I would agree that many excellent 3rd party apps are really helping lots of us to get maximum use and enjoyment out of the iPhone.

I think it’s nice to see one award for the iPhone that is also a direct criticism of the lack of 3rd party apps support thus far in iPhone’s life.  There’s an SDK (software development kit) coming from Apple next February – but really Apple could do with hurrying up, and making sure they manage to support the grass roots developers already producing apps, as well as all the big, mainstream software companies.
