Well, the long-awaited – and very long-running – WWDC 2009 keynote is done (after a little over 2 hours) and we got the word on pretty much all the subjects we were all hanging on. The biggest news items are:
- The new iPhone model – the iPhone 3GS – will be available on June 19th. Just 11 days away, or 11 agonizing days away, depending on your level of desire for it.
- The current iPhone 3G will be on sale for $99 starting today.
- The new iPhone OS 3.0 – with copy&paste and Spotlight search and all its other goodness will be released June 17th – 2 days before the new iPhone.
- The new iPhone 3GS name is based on the S standing for speed – as in it is meant to be many times faster than the 3G. It includes an upgraded 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording capability – just as expected.
There’s lots more news and I’ll have some more initial thoughts on what we heard at the keynote shortly.
Who’s up for the new model next week? I know I am …

Does the new iPhone 3GS have a faster processor (ala. the current iPod Touch)?
Does it have more "working" memory so we can run more apps at the same time more easily?
What about iChat video calls?
Still can't shoot video on the 3G with the 3.0 upgrade? Is that correct?
Paul – iChat – I think not, as there was no mention of it. Faster processor and more RAM memory = I really hope so, but it is a little worrying that specs for those were not mentioned at all.
Reggie – I believe that is correct. Video recording is specific to the new iPhone 3GS model.
Thanks, Patrick. I must agree that the new features seem a bit clouded in mystery in respect of the hardware supporting them.
Reggie, it will be very interesting to see what the jailbreak community does to support the video capabilities of the 3G S, albeit at half the frame rates, likely =
Paul – yup, does seem very odd that they did not shout about improved processor / RAM at yesterday's event – guess that likely means those did not get the major upgrades that were expected …
