Citrix – a big and blue-chip name in corporate remote access systems – has released an iPhone app, Citrix Receiver.
The app promises ‘fast, easy access to Windows applications from anywhere’. There are already a number of VNC and similar apps for the iPhone that can provide remote access to computers from the iPhone – but for all those using Citrix in their company environments, this app should be a very welcome sight.
This first release of Citrix Receiver is referred to as a ‘Technology Preview’ – a beta really – and carries a version number of 0.9.0 – so I assume updates should be expected soon.
Here are a few of the features highlighted on the app’s description page:
HIGH DEFINITION EXPERIENCE – Citrix HDX technology delivers rich, multi-media content including websites built in Flash™ and Silverlight™
SIMPLE, INTUITIVE NAVIGATION – interact with Windows apps and docs using intuitive gestures to zoom, pan, click, scroll and type with ease
SAFE AND SECURE – data is encrypted and stored on your company network, not on your device
And here are its requirements:
- Wi-Fi or 3G connection
- Citrix XenApp and XenApp Web Services
- Windows applications hosted on Citrix XenApp
I’ve worked with Citrix at a few client locations in the past, and I must admit I prefer Windows’ in-built RDP to work with – but I’ve known many folks who swear by Citrix over the years.
You can find Citrix Receiver in the App Store now, and it’s a free app.
