PGA Championship iPhone app

Golf’s last major tournament of the year starts tomorrow, and of course there are a number of iPhone apps that will help you follow it – including old friends like SportsTap and Sportacular.  The official PGA Championship app may be amongst the best options though, especially if you’re an avid fan of the majors.

It looks to have a very strong list of features – as it should since it’s priced at $1.99 for an app with a useful life span of maximum four days – including some live video streaming and push notifications.

Here are some of the app’s features:

  • Live Video: watch two ‘Marquee Groups’ each day (Thurs-Sun) throughout their entire round.  Watch the entire field play through Hazeltine’s Par 3 holes all four rounds.
  • Personal Live Alerts: Receive alerts for your 5 favorite players – know when they: begin their round, end their round, score a double-bogey or worse, score a birdie or eagle, and know how they score after every hole
  • News, highlights of past tournaments, tips – as well as leaderboard and course layout sections

The wording of the Live Video feature has me wondering whether they’re going to run the risk of being ‘stuck’ with a ‘marquee’ group that does not contain the current leader during the final couple rounds.  It doesn’t sound flexible to me – sounds like they’ll follow whichever group is deemed most interesting each day (presumably the leading group on Saturday and Sunday), but if those players fall back a bit from the lead, they won’t be able to switch to the current leader’s group.  Hope I’m wrong about that.

PGA Championship is in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.

I'm pretty impressed with the live video streaming of the event. I don't think the price is to bad even though, like you said, the app is only going to last for the 4 days of the tour. All in all it looks like an easier way to view the tour and see what you would normally see on tv, its just in the palm of your hand.
