There’s a new (and free) app for the iPhone called Geek Test. Since I have worked at ‘geeky’ roles for years – in support, network management and IT consultancy – I thought this would be fun to take a look at.
The app is based on some un-named online test that I’ve never taken before, so I have nothing to compare it to – but I do know I got a very low ‘geekness’ rating. Not sure whether to be happy or sad about that.
Here’s a little more about the app’s purpose, from its App Store description:
To help you to find your level on the geek attitude scale, here is an adaptation of an American test approved by the international geek community. This test is fun to take to the third degree and beyond. You will then be able to compare your level of geekness with your friends!
The app is quite basic, as you’d expect. It presents a fairly long set of quiz questions, in sections, and then grades you at the end.
Some of the sections include things like what you have read (testing your Science Fiction addiction it seems) …
What you wear (apparently all real geeks are seriously eccentric or even tasteless dressers) …
What you watch (again, looks like you need to be a big Sci-Fi fan to score high here) …
And even what you believe in …
Speaking of things we believe in, the app’s description indicates its devs are not big believers in equal opportunity geekdom …
You’re a girl? No problem. Are you a geek’s girlfriend or do you pretend to be a one yourself? Take the test and you will find out!
Wow – so you’ve got to be the girlfriend of a ‘real’ geek or you’re just a pretender eh. I know quite a few very geeky women on the web – and I’m betting many of them would do far better than my paltry score …
I think I fell down a lot for not being a huge Sci-Fi fan and not believing in unicorns enough.
You can find Geek Test in the App Store now, for free. If you have a chance to try it out, let me know how far ahead of me you are in the geek charts

13.68% WTF. I failed worse than you.
LiteBytes – LOL – which were your weak areas (with few check marks)???
28.99%. Extra points because I'm a girl.
bluefuel318 – Nice one, you doubled my score. I knew there were girls out there who could kick this thing's butt
You shouldn't steal artwork. All that art is copyright Scott Johnson from myextralife.com. I hope you're making arrangements to pay him or remove that app from the store.
One of the primary reasons the iPhone has become so popular is the fact that 99.8 percent of all the applications available are free and created with open-source code. Meaning the idea of it all is to use code, images, etc. that other programmers have already developed, so as not to re-invent the wheel (so to speak). I am just saying if Scott Johnson is not complaining then you should just leave it alone man. You apparently do not appreciate the technology that is freely given to you.
Mar – when you say *you* shouldn't steal artwork etc., I hope you realize I am not the developer of this app, and have nothing to do with it, other than having installed it via the App Store and given it a once over here. The images are screencaps from the app.
Perhaps you want to contact the app's creators …
Sorry Patrick, you're right. Scott's already sent a cease and desist letter to the developer. I guess I jumped the gun here because it hit me personally and professionally to see a friend's art used without permission. I was absent the day they taught "Look before you leap."
Mar – no worries at all. I think it's cool that you had your friend's back, and the principle is sound. I honestly would not have covered the app if I'd have known it had ripped its graphic contents without permission. Oh, and I'm pretty expert in that leaping without looking sometimes too
